Man with moustache II

So, here I am again after two months of delaying to write a post about my visit to a grape harvesting festival in Oplenac smile I actually wasn't even visiting MyOpera for more than a month as I was really busy with my exams, but now I have some pause between them so here I am. Anyway, I've visited this festival with my father, we've bought some wine, visited some historical places that are mostly connected with our Royal House of Karađorđević and wine smile There we've visited a museum in which we could see some pictures from the time of Balkan wars, some army uniforms, etc. But what has left the strongest impression on me and my father too was a St. George′s Church also known as Oplenac Mausoleum as there are tombs of more than twenty members of Karađorđević family including Karađorđe's (Man with moustache I smile ) who was the founder of this royal family.
In the main part of the church there are sarcophagus of Karađorđe and King Petar I who built this church and mausoleum. It is built on a hill and on one side of the hill there are royal family vineyards ( that's probably the best location in Šumadija for a vineyard ). This is how they look now:
So, I've started talking about church and mausoleum. From the outside it looks just like some regular church in Serbia, nothing special but when you enter, after you pay your ticket (yes, you have to pay for entering inside this church confused ), you become amazed of the richness that surround you... I have some really bad pictures of it, my battery was almost dead and I didn't have time to make better settings, but I think these lines I've found on Wikipedia will give you impression on how much attention they've payed to details. All four façades were made from white marble, on the main façade there is a mosaic icon of St. George that has been made in Venice according to the plan of the known Serbian artist, Paja Jovanović on the basis of a golden mosaic which symbolizes the victory of the Serbian people over its enemies. The floor of the church was made in Munich, out of polished marble, in various colours. Lifted on a small podium, the throne for the King and Queen is made of polished green marble, its back is decorated with golden mosaic and mother-of-pearl, in the middle is the two-headed eagle. The arm-rest is made of marble from Dečani, while the entire seat rests on sculpted lions. The huge chandelier, 9 meters in diameter, is underneath the main dome, hanging in 8 places, above the pendent, was molted out of massive bronze. In the chandelier is a Crown set upside-down that's symbolizing the lost Serbian Empire in Kosovo battle in 1389. Interior of the temple is decorated with mosaics which are reproductions of the prettiest frescoes of the Serbian medieval arts. The entire mosaic has 725 painted compositions on which there are 1500 figures and it has 40 million various colored pieces of glass which have 15 thousand different varieties of color. Also, according to some lady we've met there gold on these icons is 14 karats gold...Anyway, everything looks really amazing bigsmile
These are some pictures I've managed to take, not that good but can pass I guess. This is inside the church:
And this is inside the mausoleum, actually this is only ceiling of this mausoleum, my battery couldn't handle any more pictures:

After this we took a little walk through Oplenac, I've got a lollipop bigsmile We also visited some other museum with pictures about First Serbian Uprising , we saw some sculptures of Karađorđe and King Petar I. This is King Petar I: He's my man with moustache II, and after visiting this two museums I've realized how Serbia was stronger or maybe just prouder while in our governments there were only men with moustaches and beards idea If in our government weren't men with moustaches but those that make our government today we would probably let Austria-Hungarian police enter our country and make their own investigation on our territory, maybe there wouldn't be any war then but there probably wouldn't exist independent Serbia too. But they've made mistakes too, like creating Kingdom of Yugoslavia and similar...
Anyway, I had some really nice time with my father that day, I think how this is the first time after many years that my father viewed some city by his feet (probably because it was not allowed to enter the city center with a car) bigsmile

A man with moustache...

In addition to my previous post I've found this saying:
"A man without moustache is like a cat without a tail."
Anyway, a few days ago my family and I went to visit a village called Orašac in Šumadija. It is a well known place in Serbia for its history. As you may know, Serbia was under Ottoman Empire for a centuries in the past and of course Serbs had a couple of uprisings against it. It's a bit strange how we have fallen under Ottoman Umpire in 15th century but first time we did something in order to maintain some greater independence from them was in the year 1804. So on the February 15, 1804 people from all nearby places gathered together under the leadership of Đorđe Petrović Karađorđe in the place in Orašac called Marićevića jaruga. That's when the First Serbian Uprising began, the Ottoman Empire crushed it 9 years later. After this uprising there came a Second Serbian Uprising in 1815 which has ultimately resulted in Serbian semi-independence from the Ottoman Empire. We've became independent in 1878, but I'm not going into any details now, if you're interested into more details about First Serbian Uprising you can read them here .
Unfortunately First Serbian Uprising museum haven't worked when we were there as we were a little bit late... But we managed to see some other perhaps more interesting places in Orašac smile
This is a statue of Karađorđe (This is a nickname Turks gave him, it means black Đorđe) in Orašac. He was a man with a nice moustache but I'm not sure if it's noticeable from this picture. Also he is the founder of the House of Karađorđević. More about him here .

This is Marićevića jaruga, place where they've gathered (It didn't look like this back then right )

On this white wall in the middle of this monument there are some written verses. They go like this:
" ...Потресе се земља од истока
да се Србљи на оружје дижу...
Јер је крвца из земље проврела,
земан дошо ваља војевати...
...А када се с Царем завадимо,
да устане сви седам краљева
да нас мире. Помирит нас неће!
Бићемо се, море, до једнога! "

You may see how I like using Cyrillic letters when I write in Serbian smile It says: ...The land from the east had shaken for Serbs to rise to their weapons... Because a blood from the land has boiled, the time have come for we should fight... ...And when we estrange with the Emperor, so that all seven kings rise to reconcile us. They will not reconcile us! We will fight till the last man!
I hope I've managed to translate it correctly smile
This is also on this monument, I like it (You may recognize Karađorđe here too smile )

And Karađorđe again bigsmile He looked nice smile
I had a very good time there with my family, and it gave me some new ideas for places I should visit someday smile

I've got someone to blame...

Most of the people hide themselves from the sun, others worship it. There is an old proverb which says how it would be better if the one doesn't exist than him to be afraid of the sun. Probably cause of sun gives life to everything that surrounds us, we shouldn't be afraid of the source. So, now I'm wondering why am I telling this as this is not what I meant to be subject of this post... Anyway, I've found a little kitten in my garden a few days ago, actually it has found me. I'm not sure how did he get separated from its mother as he is so little and he can't find himself some food. I believe it's a female kitten, but I can't be sure as he/she doesn't let me catch him/her smile It is one of the cutest kittens I've ever seen, but very vigilant, you can play with it but only as long as she determine the distance between you and her. Even though I'm still confused with its gender, I've already gave this cute little kitten a name, and this name can be some kind of explanation to my introduction. Meet Kyra bigsmile I was searching the internet for some short Egyptian name and I've found this on some site for baby names. This is what they say about it on this site .

Kyra \k(y)-ra\ as a girl's name is pronounced KEER-ah. It is of Greek origin, and the meaning of Kyra is "lord". From the male name Kyros (see Kyrie), from the Persian and Egyptian word for "like Ra, the sun". A short form of Kyria, the Greek title of respect for a woman. In Slavonic it means "strong woman". May also be a Russian name meaning "beloved".
I wanted to give her an Egyptian name as she has some black lines around her eyes which looks like someone rounded them with an eyeliner. And as a black eyeliner reminds me of Egypt I had to give her a little bit more of Egypt...
I don't have some good photos of her, I have only this one as my batteries for camera emptied. She looks a bit evil on this one, I'm starting to create some strange versions of how she has lost her mother scared

But she is actually really cute... I definitely have to take more pictures of her soon...

Little update I've promised smile Pictures were taken with different camera so colors may be a bit different smile

Every now and then I fall apart...

A few days ago while reading a post from my MyOpera friend I've remembered of one of the fairy tales my mom red to me when I was a little child. It is a fairytale called "Under the willow tree" by Hans Christian Andersen... And today I decided to read it again now when I'm grown up... It is one of those love stories with a sad end, but quite effective and honest I believe... At the beginning of this fairytale there is a story about two buns which I should have heard a long time ago, but I didn't, and now I decided to share it with you...
On one tray there were to buns- A seller began with talking. -One of the buns was wearing a hat and had a form of man; the other was in form of a lady. Instead of a hat she had a golden cap on her head. They should be viewed from the front as well as people, it is not nice to look at anybody from the back, seller prolonged the story. On the left, a man had a bitter almond, as a heart; woman didn't have it, she was just a regular bun. They've spent a long time together on that tray as there were served as a template, and then, finally, they started to love each other, but none of them wanted two admit it to the other one. What was supposed to be made in order for things to become serious. -Man has to be the first to tell that- thought a lady. Yet she was deeply interested in whether he likes her or not. But in his head one greedy thought was born: he wanted to be a man of flesh and blood, some boy from the street with four coins. If so, he would bought a lady and ate her. The buns withered and hardened, as there were laying on that tray for days and weeks. The lady was possessed with a gentle female thoughts. -For me even the fact that I was beside him on this tray is enough- she said to herself. Then something stopped in her waist and she fell broken. -She would have live longer if she was aware of my love- said male bun for himself. That is the end of the story of two buns- said a seller. One should admire their lives and their quiet love, which has led them nowhere.
While I was reading this story, I've wondered, would it be any different if I knew about it before...Am I a lady bun, I wondered... A person who is always playing by the rules, a person who is living in its fantasies but will never do anything to turn them into reality... But yet, I still believe in something that a lady bun said, man SHOULD make a first move... It is something expected, so the only thing that is left for us to think about if they don't make a first move is that they never even wanted to make it... What do you think about it? Can you really be in lack of courage when you fell in love?

Village maiden gathering mushrooms, down by woodland lakes and brooks...

Last weekend I had a visit from my dear friend and we had some quality time together and also went to visit mountain Rudnik with my father. Mountain is covered with woods as most of the mountains in Šumadija, its woods are full of small brooks and there is also a river called Jasenica. In this time of year woods are full of mushrooms so we took a chance to pick them smile
This mushroom on the picture isn't really of that kind we picked but I've ate all of the mushrooms we picked before taking picture of it bigsmile chef BTW. The mushroom I was eating is called chanterelle and as this was the first time I've tried it, I must say how I love it smile We were preparing chanterelle with zucchini, and I think they make a perfect match...
One more picture from Rudnik... I think I've mentioned before how my father is a beekeeper, and his bees were the main reason why we went to Rudnik (It was acacia season ) This was the first time I've went with my father somewhere where he transport his bees and unfortunately also the first time I was bitten by a bee, and even worse than that, the place of bite was my nose...I can only say how it hurts harder than a bite by a hornet in a leg(trust me I know it, I've tried both of the bites wink )
As we heard from some of the people from Rudnik, there supposed to be four water mills on the river Jasenica, we've visited two of them but unfortunately none of them worked so we couldn't actually see those mills, we've just saw those houses inside which there are mills sad These are that houses...

Anyway we had a great time together, and after we returned home, and I was left alone in the house, I've decided to try to do something I was thinking about for a long time. I've finally made a skirt, without use of any help from some sewing magazine, but with a little help of vintage fashion blogs... I wouldn't dare to wear it when going to town (I'm such a coward...) but I can always wear it at home, I feel happy in it smile My first garment that emphasize my waist perfectly bigsmile I can't wait buying more material for sewing bigsmile This isn't really greatest picture as I first video recorded myself and than I took a picture of a video with my camera as I couldn't make a regular 'print screen' thing... So that's the explanation for the strange color stripes and blurriness...

I said your head is your feet

What a wonderful days were previous two days. This doesn't mean how today is not a wonderful day too but it is not that good as they were bigsmile So right now I'm on a spring break so I decided to spend little time in the wood happy I took some pictures out there, sang some strange songs (good thing that only my father was there with me) , also me and my father caught some little creature who seams to be fish but it was rather strange... I was also eating one wonderful little thing which reminded me on my childhood (it was much cheaper then, now they are kinda stilling money...)So here are some pictures smile

I took this one at the entrance to the wood. It shows almost everything except the sounds of birds and smell of a fresh wood at spring...

There were a lot of these little white flowers all around the wood. It is quite a pleasant feeling walking amongst plenty of flowers, near the wood creek, away from everything...

Here's that creek I've mentioned, by the way this is very close to that place where I'm picking the most tasteful type of garlic 'sremuš'

And that creature... It is found in this creek in every part of the year and it's kinda funny... Don't worry my father didn't hurt it, we were just enjoying our time trying to catch some of them as the are pretty fast and after catching this one we've just returned it to the water and continued our walk smile
And now the best part of the story...

Kinder surprise... I remember how when I was a little child I was always spending my money, which I was getting for buying some food while in school, on this little chocolate egg bigsmile It is the most delicious milk chocolate ( only 20g of it sad ) inside which we can find this plastic yolk inside which we have some little toy... This serial of toys which is currently actual in the markets in my place contains of toys with nicknames meaning 'unknowing', 'knowing', 'supercilious', 'strong', 'teacher', 'explorer', 'amorous' and 'guitarist'... Of course I've got the knowing one bigsmile Something is trying to tell me something or what... cool
By the way, HAPPY EASTER to all of you yes cheers
And how did you spend Easter ?

Santa is still giving presents...

Actually not Santa, it was my pleasant company from previous post bigsmile We had some quality time together, went shopping, talked 'till we fell asleep, drank some tea from my vintage teacups made in Yugoslavia, etc.
So I've got some sweet presents from my visitor from which I've ate a chocolate and I was left with this sweet Santa from who I had to take picture of 'cause it was so cute. Thank you visitor smile

These are that fingers that doesn't fit any ring so I have to give up using that king of accessorize which is driving me crazy... But it makes some lyrics realistic such as "...brittle fingers and thin cigarettes, so hard to tell apart, she hasn't spoken yet..." only 'problem' is that I don't smoke so bigsmile

Breakfast in Serbia

I had such a nice breakfast in a pleasant company. Warm orange-rum tea and muffins with pork rinds. It's close enough to how Serbian traditional breakfast looks like.
Breakfast in Serbia is an early but hearty meal, although before breakfast most people usually take a cup of coffee, in modern times maybe an espresso or ness. With the breakfast itself either a tea, milk, milk coffee, or cocoa milk is served, pastries or bread are served with butter, jam, yogurt, sour cream and cheese, accompanied by bacon, sausages, salami, scrambled eggs, kajmak, burek,..etc.
What did you have for breakfast?

The delight from Switzerland...

This delight came to me the day before a test in school as usually... Good thing I've got an A and even better thing is that I discovered that my skills in making magical cakes are very high...So I've decided to share this new temptation for my slender figure smile
It is called: Swiss carrot cake and it looks like this bigsmile

If you would like to try it which I highly recommend you here goes the recipe...
Ingredients:
  • 5 eggs( divide yolks from egg whites)
  • 100g of flour
  • 250g + 4 spoons of yellow sugar
  • 250g of grated carrots
  • 250g of grated almond
  • 1 baking powder
  • juice and grated peel from 1 lemon
  • cinnamon (according to your taste)
  • 1 pinch of salt
  • 4 spoons of water
  • 4 spoons of yellow sugar
  • 50g of margarine
  • 70g of chocolate
  • juice and grated peel of 1 orange
  • 5 to 6 chopped date palms

Preparation:
First mix yolks and 250g of sugar. Add lemon grated peel and half of its juice, flour, baking powder, cinnamon, almonds, carrots and stir it slowly. In the second dish mix egg whites with salt till you get hard 'snow'... Unite those two masses but very slowly and carefully so you don't break the snow hardness ( I recommend just slow circling in one direction) and after stirring transfer it in baking brass (on which you put that baking paper or something similar, your choice). Bake it for about 50 minutes on the 180 degrees of Celsius. When it's done leave in refrigerator or in my case as it is freezing here leave it any room in which you feel like you will freeze after 5 minutes... While it's cooling in some smaller cooking dish melt the rest of the sugar in the water on a weak fire. Add the rest of lemon juice, orange peel and juice, margarine, chocolate and date palms. With often stirring cook for a few minutes. On a cooled cake spill warm 'filling' and leave it till it cold down...
After this all that is left for you to do is enjoying happy
* Little tips: After spilling mass in baking brass do not touch it, you will destroy its airiness. Also don't be so precise with baking, look at it from time to time to check if it's baked, I baked it for only 25 minutes so it depends from stove to stove...

It's the most wonderful time of the year

Celebrated on the 7th of January Orthodox Christmas is by only this fact very unique...In all of those countries such as Russia, Georgia and some others, and Serbia of course in that time of the year exists many customs which are more all less different from country to country...So as I promised to some of you here on MyOpera I will now write about Serbian customs for this holiday smile
The day before Christmas is called 'Badnji dan' and on that day all believers should fast, actually 40 days before Christmas there is some fast and this is the last day of it but most of us fast only last day smile Also on this day we are preparing food dinner and for Christmas and father go to forest in the morning to cut 'badnjak' for the person we call 'polažajnik' and he also brings one branch of cornel(which represents health). I would explain 'badnjak' as a nice branch of the oak tree, my father just cut it but as I red he should turn to east and pray to God before cutting. 'Badnjak' should represent tree which shepherds brought to Joseph and which he burned in order to warm up Christ on the night when he was born. We shouldn't bring it in the house before night.
At night usually me and my sisters (but I think customs says men should do it) enter the house and bring 'badnjak',cornel and straw into the house smile We congratulate Christmas and 'Badnje veče' to our parents and they throw corn on us lol Straw represents that straw from the cave in which Christ was born. Then we are doing some ritual with 'badnjak', as you may saw usually in villages there is a stove which is not electrical so you have to create fire (which I never managed to do) and we move the upper part of it so we can see fire and then we are hitting into that fire with our 'badnjak' trees and saying something like "How many sparkles that many luck"...So I know this is kind a funny and completely pagan but customs are customs. And if this is strange than let me tell you this, in some parts of Serbia customs like going around feast, which is on the floor on which they throw straw( which we are just keeping in the bag we put in the corner of the table), and imitating chicken sound doh are still kept ... So...On that dinner we shouldn't use knives and forks and we should keep calm so that we and everything in our house keep calm for the entire year and we all eat homemade bread which is decorated with some shapes which represents our animals and fields and some food such as fish, dried plums and of course before eating we all pray to God. That paying is different from the others because we keep a candle in the middle of flowerpot with wheat which we plant in it at th 19th of December (on that day is the holiday called St. Nikola) and when we finish praying we put out the candle with red wine. At the end of dinner we should all take one walnut and one of us throw four walnuts each in the other corner of a dining room which stays there till next Christmas.
Next day is Christmas or as we call it 'Božić'.Early in the morning the one that enters first into the house should be 'polažajnik', but in my house me and my sisters are all 'polažajnik' no matter who wakes up or come into our house first, also I think that 'polažajnik' should be male not female but my family don't care. 'Polažajnik' should represent those sages which followed the star from the east and came to the new born Christ. So when we come into our dining room we first do the same thing with 'badnjak' we did last night and than we stand on some ax which is turned to the east and which stands near window, pray to God and drink red wine with one grain of cornel and then finish our fasting with one boiled egg and after that we have breakfast. And then for lunch we pray again, and then we have something called 'česnica' in which my mother put one coin we change every 10 years which we are all breaking and the one who finds coin in his part of it stick it on the wall above the table and he will be followed by luck as long as it stays up...With the parts of 'česnica' we should feed our animals. After that my mother gives to 'polažajnik' so to me and my sisters presents. Presents usually contains of some sweets, some cloths(or similar, when I was younger that was some toy but nothing to fancy) and a cake(or should we call it bread) which is made from regular dough for bread but when it is still not baked it is shaped like some half circle which ends are crossed and in which middle she puts walnut and on each end she put a branch of basil and she leaves some sign from a wooden stamp( she also do this with that cake from the last night)...There is also a belief that what you do for Christmas you will do whole year...
Well these are only customs for which I know that are used in my part of Serbia, but I believe this all doesn't matter, it doesn't matter will you have Christmas tree or you will have some customs like this the most important thing about this holiday is that the whole family is together and that we do all those funny things together and that is the only reason I really like this holiday...It is not about customs, it is not about presents, it is not about faith or God (at least in my case) it is about the fact that this among the eastern and our 'slava'(if you don't know what is that my friend Anci wrote something about that so: http://my.opera.com/AnitaMargita/blog/?id=5375971 ) is the day for which whole family gathers together and celebrate...
