, ,

Portugal can boast some of the most sort after golfing holidays in Europe. Thanks to the brilliant year round climate and the top quality courses, hotels and resorts, the Algarve has become renowned for being a perfect foreign golf holiday destination.

For larger groups, the action packed town of Vilamoura is the best destination. In addition to the nightlife that is focused on the marina, Vilamoura has seven championship golf courses. Choosing from the Algarve's endless golfing delights can be tricky, but some recommendations are the Penina resort, Dona Filipa, which boasts San Lorenzo, arguably the country's best track, and the relatively new Monte Rei development in the Algarve's east.

Slightly further afield is the charming island of Madeira where sunny golf holidays can be found, but one spot that is emerging as the next big thing is the golf coast of Lisbon. The shoreline of the coast on the Atlantic has some awe-inspiring courses such as Oitavos, and other top quality tracks like Praia D'El Ray and Quinta da Marinha. These old classics can be usurped by fantastic new venues which can be sure to make your golf in Portugal some of the best destinations for golf in the sun.

The Algarve has long been the best areas for golf in Portugal. The Algarve has a large range of top quality courses and resorts placing at the top end of areas to visit in Europe. Since the arrival of low cost airlines the areas around Lisbon have emerged as a fantastic golfing escape. Established resorts to the south of the city like Aroeira and new resorts like Campo Real, and Praia D'El Ray in the north have come in for a large amount of praise, putting the area around Lisbon firmly on the map. The coast of Lisbon allows golfers to experience the true Portuguese culture while also playing terrific courses. The combination of the vibrant capital city and the charm of the young upcoming urban environment give a perfect golfing getaway.

For some years the Algarve has had a remarkable number of top quality championship courses and resorts stretching out along the coastline. Faro is the major airport and can be reached from most major airports, and this will be the starting point of your Algarve golf holiday. Faro is within an hour's drive of most of the destinations in the Algarve. Vilamoura is without doubt one of the best golf complexes, transformed from the harbour town. Vilamoura is surrounded by other golfing gems such as Quinta Do Lago, San Lorenzo and Vale Do Lobo. Alternatives to Vilamoura include the Nicklaus-designed resort of Monte Rei near Tavira.

Madeira is another area of Portugal that benefits from the all year round climate thanks to being situated just off the coast of North West Africa and has been long known as a beautiful holiday destination. The capital of Funchal is a blend of Madeiran culture and vibrancy introduced by the increase in tourism. All around the island can be found areas of outstanding natural beauty including the spectacular mountain views which can be found all over the island. Madeira also has some fantastic golf courses and hotels. Palheiro golf club has some spectacular views over the capital city and the ocean coastline. Santo da Serra has hosted the European tour event of the Madeira Open for some years and is a true test of golfing skill. Both these courses have put Madeira on the Portuguese map and has made it a good alternative to the Canary Islands or Portugal mainland.
