StatCounter and Net Applications market share numbers compared to actual numbers

, , , ...

Google just announced that Chrome has more than 30 million users. The latest number for Opera from a few months ago was more than 40 million users. However, both StatCounter and Net Applications list Chrome with a higher market share than Opera in October (1.88 for Opera/4.17 for Chrome, and 2.17 for Opera/3.58 for Chrome, respectively).

That's how reliable browser statistics are...

Could Google's browser statistics replace Net Application and StatCounter?

, , , ...

Mozilla's Asa Dotzler wants Google to start providing browser usage statistics again.

I completely agree.

Asa also thinks that Google's statistics will be more globally representative than what we have to day.

That, I don't agree with.

Opera has 3% market share... on botnets?

, , ,

According to a report by Finjan, Opera is used on 3% of a recently discovered botnet consisting of 1.9 million malware-infected PCs.

While a "fun" fact in itself, this number actually confirms the global Opera usage figure reported by StatCounter. However, the botnet figures have a much higher usage share for IE, and lower for Firefox, than StatCounter reports.

Again, we should remain skeptical of browser statistics because of all the error sources that exist. The botnet figures are very interesting, though, because the methodology is obviously very different to that of StatCounter and other browser statistics companies.

It does indicate that Net Applications's <1% for Opera must be way off, if nothing else. And yet, journalists and bloggers repeat the numbers from Net Applications without batting an eye.

Mobile Web usage and revenue explodes in Russia

, , , ...

According to procontent.ru, ComNews Research has published a report on the mobile internet market in Russia. According to the report, revenue grew by 87% in 2008 thanks to a growth in the number of mobile Web users.

It is interesting to note that according to StatCounter, Opera Mini has a nearly 80% market share of the mobile browser market in Russia. Although browser statistics are highly unreliable, StatCounter does mirror some of the statistics for several major sites in Russia. It seems to be much more reliable than other services, such as Net Applications, which focus almost exclusively on the United States.

So while one should remain skeptical of browser statistics, it is an interesting thought that Opera might be the main driver of mobile data traffic growth in Russia!

Even in times of economic turmoil, people obviously keep browsing the Web. This is why Opera Software is doing very well financially, while other companies are struggling.

More and more mobile operators are also realizing that Opera Mini (and Opera Turbo) can help them get the most out of their current network infrastructure without costly network upgrades.

Europeans switched from Firefox to IE and Opera in March

, , , ...

According to StatCounter, March was a tough month for Firefox. It dropped 1.73% in Europe (down to 36.81%). On the other hand, IE gained 1.01% (up to 50.15%), and Opera gained 0,55% (up to 7.9%). It looks like Firefox users may actually be switching to IE and perhaps also to Opera, which must be worrying for Mozilla. Is Firefox is more vulnerable to changes in the market than other browsers? As we recall, Chrome actually caused an increase in the number of Opera downloads, and accelerated Opera's desktop user growth.

StatCounter thinks Opera is big in Europe, tiny in North America

, , , ...

With more and more of Net Applications's dirty secrets being dug up all the time, other stats companies are taking the opportunity to speak up and try to gather a following. One of them, StatCounter, has apparently been doing stats since 1999, but they don't seem to be quoted much by the media.
