That means "Theft From Auto", and is a constant subject around here. A nmber of the cars of the Old Dominion Brewhouse were broken into election night, and then the following Thursday (the 6th). Minor items taken, and an iPod. The police were notified, and the parking lot gate is now padlocked to unauthorized people. The ivy on the fence on Ninth Street (1210-1214?) Nonth) has also been pulled down to increase visibility from the street. The car alorm went off, but no one really pays attention any more around here.
TFA gets discussed at community meetings by the police all the time. It's basically break out a window, grab something, and move on. Quick. Very little evidence left.
Outside of a locked garage, the best way, apprently, to avoid it is simply not to have anything visible in the car that might seem good to steal. And easy to fence.
"Anything" means the obvious, such as laptops and iPods, and also the non-obvious, such as a CD, perhaps indicating a CD player. Or an iPod earpiece. Or even a suction cup ring on the window suggesting a GPS device somewhere in the car.
Further note: Don't put those items in the trunk when you park. You may be watched. Do it before you get here, say while in Ward 3.
It is some help to have a local licence plate (DC, MD, VA) as then you are more likely to appear in court than someone from North Carolina or Texas. And yes, Dallas Cowboys decals in the window may indicate lower IQ, but an iPod is still an iPod.
