Dave Salter points out this utterly fantastic representation of the alleys (yes, NC was an "alley" in its more plebeian days). It's a post at the Greater Greater Washington website.
When you get to know the alleys well, it's just fascinating to see what it was like when your house wasn't there, and what got built about the same time. You sort of know, but "seeing" it is nice.
