Hope We Don't Have a Fire.

The editor was cooking out last night. There is a chain link fence at the rear of the back yard, opening onto the Blagden Alley extension which goes to the 1200 block of Ninth Street. There was some guy backing a dump truck down the alley. The editor was concerned that he didn't seem like a professional driver. In other words, if he hadn't had help, the alley would have been wider.
As part of the group, some gal with the Federal police look stops and asks whether the garage doors up the alley are actually used. The editor says yes, so the dump truck is moved closer to Ninth Street so the garages are clear to the center of the alley.
The editor asks if the can move it in 30 seconds for a fire truck. She says yes, that the keys are on the truck. It seems as if she had been over that question.
This morning the editor goes out to get the WaPo at First Cup. That entails walking back to Tenth and M and then back down the other side of M Street. On the way, notices that there is a Jersey barrier in front of Blagden Alley. Those don't move in 30 seconds. The FBI type, when asked about it, didn't seem concerned.
Anyone who has lived on that alleys and courts for several years has seen fires. It is a constant concern. It would be nice if everyone shared that concern.
