It Happens About Once a Year, or So

Chatted with Alem Abebe of First Cup last Saturday morning after he had no morning WaPo. Sometimes, the WaPo delivery fails, he said, so they checked and they did deliver. (The editor gave up on the WaPo's sporadic home delivery several years ago, so he walks across the street and gets it.)

Alem says that the paper, and pastries sometimes, get stolen between 4 and 6 in the morning, before he and Simaret get in. The papers then get sold on the street to incoming commuters. Most of those papers are legitimate, and so stamped. Others are stolen from Alem and businesses like his or from the newspaper boxes on corners.

Usually it's the local homeless population, and really just one or two people. When the right people get busted, the problem goes away for a year or two. Then someone new shows up. This is the first the editor has heard about in quite a while.
