What's Going On?

The editor got two dinner-time calls last evening from some survey outfits. He politely, but firmly, said no. It almost seems as if there is a survey call an evening. One was from the DC Department of Health and Human Services. They wanted to know how healthy the editor's household was. The caller seemed miffed that the editor didn't want to give his government his health status.

Is it something in the air? The editor is curious about the number of surveys. He always thought they were somewhat expensive, so some outfits are still spending. And of course he thought he was on the "No Call" list. Apparently surveys are as exempt as political robocalls. Don't we miss those!

Mari writes: The surveys are crap. Trained as a librarian we are to look at what's behind the question, and most of the time it's a preconceived idea that they are looking for support for. I got a robo call, press 1 for mostly agree type things. I had to hang up when they got to a question that the true answer was 'none of the above', which was not a possible answer. Question? Over the past year have I changed my use of phone devices while driving? None of the answers reflect that I'm a licensed driver but I haven't driven in the past year with a phone in the car. I also got another call obviously funded by a DC metropolitian governance group. The questions kept pushing for me to support more power for a group to oversee regional transportation projects over local govenments. At one point I told the caller that the questions sucked and whoever dreamed them up should be slapped. Lies, damned lies, and statistics. Oh change the links I'm at blog.inshaw.com

They are often fun during political season. You can try to screw up the poll with answers of who you like or will vote for. And it's fun to figure out if the poll is from a certain candidate. I had at least two in the last season who hung up when I said Caucasian when asked for race. But I really have to be in the mood now, and that's been rare lately.

Anonymous writes: I totally dislike when I run to the phone and there is no one there, in other words, the computer dialed my number but did not have enough staff on hand to talk on the phone. There should be a law against that. Caller ID also helps. I don't answer calls I know are suveys or research groups, or I pick up the phone and hang up immediately.

We were out Saturday. Voice main had a "Michael" from DHS still wanting to do a "survey". Deleted. We'll be out at dinner time tonight. Hope to foil them again.

About an hour ago, someone from a Vaughn Interviewing Company, or something like that called about doing a survey. Told him I wasn't doing surveys this month. Hung up.

This zip code used to be so calm. Few surveys. Very few Christmas catalogs. That has all changed. Is this a "gentrification" thing?

DHS again. "Bethany" called at 7:35pm last night. DHS still wants to "survey" me. Saying "no" and "stop calling" doesn't seem to matter. The next time, I'll do a full blog of the DHS harassment.
