FINENESS OF WEAVE
The finer the weave, the easier it becomes to produce curvilinear designs. In a typical coarse peasant weave there are simply not enough knots to enable a fine curve to be produced. By very skilful designing, however, the Rumanians manage to weave floral designs in the Persian style using only 110,000 knots/m2 (about 70 knots/in.2). This is a remarkable achievement, even if one is often left with the impression that the designers have tried to incorporate more detail than the stitch will allow; certainly anything coarser than this is suitable only for geometric designs. (Chinese designs, it should he noted, are a special case, owing to the particular characteristics of Chinese art; cf. p. 313 and figs. 381 and 567.)
