Now that JLS are splitting up...

, , , ...

Ah yes! JLS are a band that finished second to Alexandra Burke in the X Factor a few years ago. Both Ms Burke and JLS have become two of the most successful acts ever to appear on the UK X Factor. Fellow X Factor contestants One Direction still have not sold as many albums as either of them.

I mention JLS as Gloria is a fan of theirs and to her disappointment they recently decided to split up.

I was not surprised at the news as they all have a lot going on in their lives outside of the band. One member is now not only a DJ but is also married and about to become a father, a second member is in a long term relationship and has bought a deer farm in Scotland, Gloria's favourite member is looking to go into band management and the fourth member has a judging spot on a Sky Television show. On top of that the four of them are also running their own charitable foundation. To summarise, the band is starting to suffer anyway as they are becoming too busy to promote their singles meaning that their last single didn't even make the charts.

So to console Gloria in her hour of disappointment I rashly offered to accompany her to a concert in their farewell tour.

Hmm! I've been thinking that it's a little while since I went to a live concert. The last concert that I went to was in 2008.

I accompanied a few friends of mine to see The Cure at Wembley after waiting in all day for a fridge/freezer to be delivered. The day before had been my last day working at Bedales School and the next week would see me working back in an office...well, in a call centre, anyway. wink

Our group was constructed from old school friends and a few people who I had worked with in the Civil Service after leaving college.

I met up with Darren and Charlie in a pub. Darren remains my best friend who I met at school and he still works in the Civil Service. The arrangement was that the one of our clan, a manager in the Civil Service, would drive me and the Civil Service half of the group to Wembley in his up market car. Well, his car broke down while he was driving to the pub. It was at that moment that I realised that my third hand Honda Civic would one day become world famous as, with the support of the manager's Sat Nav device, it took the four of us to Wembley. party

The Cure are such great value. The tickets were about £20. For that small outlay they played the majority of their repertoire. There is little speaking as Robert Smith has always felt awkward speaking to audiences. And the line up that night is the one that I have always felt to be their best: Robert Smith on vocals and guitar, Porl Thompson on guitar, Simon Gallup on bass and Jason Cooper on drums.

Oh well, maybe we'll see JLS this year. I never got the chance to see Talking Heads and SlipKnoT are now without the late Paul Gray. I really fancy going to another live concert. There's nothing quite like it...

Collop Monday, Shrove Tuesday, St Valentine's Day...and so on

, , , ...

What a week for Gloria and me to have some days off work. We both needed it! We were feeling quite rough on Monday and we've ended the week under the weather, too. We need to take better care of ourselves in 2013 than we were able to in 2012.

Oh yes, the title of this blog post. I could give you a long explanation of Collop Monday and Shrove Tuesday but I'll leave that to Wikipedia this time.

I'll talk a little about Valentine's Day, though. I booked a table at a nearby hotel which was near enough to stagger home from after a few drinks. wink The food was great, the meal was expensive and the Baileys Lattes were fabulous (oh yes, the lactase tablets were serving my stomach that evening) - as were the double whiskey and colas...The barman/waiter was resurrecting a hairstyle that I remembered from the 1980s with one side of his head shaved short and the other side growing straight and down.

We even went for a meal the following evening. Gloria had met our waitress from that evening over a decade ago and started up the banter with her as if they had last met only a few days before. At one point the waitress was serving the next table and Gloria grabbed her cloth from the back of her trousers. The waitress swung round ready to wallop me - the resulting black eye would have been a talking point at work in the coming week!

Earlier this week we also indulged in some air hockey. Neither of us had played air hockey before and Gloria's lack of previous experience did not stop her whipping my butt, so to speak.

And we've also had three consecutive days without rain! Brillaint! Just over 44 weeks until Christmas. lol

The truth about little ol' me

, , , ...

This advert has been on television a few times today and it got me thinking. The advert had a guy who knew these embarrassing facts about this girl he had not long met - her first album bought, celebrity crush...that sort of thing. He found out by texting this number. The advert got me thinking about how a lot of people will wonder how all these facts can be so readily available. I thought to myself, 'It is dangerous that people whack all this information about themselves online via Facebook or some place else and don't realise that this is all being collated'.

They don't realise that prospective employers look this up, for example. Prospective employers would be interested in profile updates such as, 'Drunk again, day off work' - that kind of drivel. Heck, even your online viewing habits are recorded which is why I rarely use Google and go for a private search engine instead. I know that a lot of my chums here are also clued up and that they use Tor for reasons other than to download internet porn! wink

Anyway, over the years I have left details about myself littered all around the interweb. I thought that I'd save you all the expense of sending a premium rate text to find out all about me. Yes, I will now detail everything about me here in this blog post. Why? Because I'm so thoughtful like that.

A game changer...

, , , ...

Hiya all. Sorry that I am not adding a photo to this blog post, the only one I could add...

I've had to change my working pattern, indeed my work, due to my wife's health. Having to leave my job (they could not help with changing my work hours) gives its own issues which I won't dwell on at this time.

It proves the point, though...

, , , ...

The other day I was thinking of putting up a blog post inspired by British X Factor finalists One Direction having the highest debut chart entry from a British act in the American singles chart for 14 years. I was thinking that this proves the point that schoolgirls have more disposable income nowadays. And I thought how disastrous schoolgirls look when they try to dress up and that any bloke over the age of 17 going out with a 15 year old girl isn't bewitched by her style of dress or fascinating conversation - he's only after one thing! At this point I realised my paternal instinct was taking over...

But I still wanted to use the blog title. And I thought, 'Hey, aren't I the world's least talented cook? Last year I set off the smoke alarm making a salad and I've already set it off twice this year already. Now, if I cooked something nice and said that anyone can prepare a meal if they want to then I could use that blog post title...'

National Hat Day

, ,

Apparently, yesterday was National Hat Day. Well, if it wasn't my team at work went to great lengths to persuade me to wear a hat. And I don't have a hat. I had to borrow Gloria's. The headwear did get me a few comments...and fewer admirers!

And my Christmas message is...

, , , ...

I have two types of friends on MyOpera - Christians and those who are not Christians. All of my friends remain my friends as you all have opinions that I value. So, how do I write a serious Christmas post that you'll all love?...

Anyway, a quick true story. I said to my mother once (my mother is a Pentecostalist lay preacher who was born in Jamaica), I asked her, "Do you think that Britain should return to its original religion?"

The firework weekend

, , , ...

I nearly cheated by not giving you an authentic photo of the weekend as I failed to get a great photo. However, I have added a couple of recent photos of me and my godson, and my god daughter on her recent 13th birthday when she visited me and Gloria.

I fell on black days...

, , , ...

Thanks Chris Cornell and Soundgarden for that song title and lyric, but it's so apt for my life at the moment. I woke up yesterday and looked in the mirror. My eyes were bloodshot and I felt very tired. I thought to myself, 'I've a pile of letters to open and read, a lot of unopened emails and my finances are in disarray. I feel pressure at work and I feel pressure keeping up with my friends. And outside my passenger side wing mirror on my car is cracked following a little collision that I had the day before.' I realised - my life is slipping out of control.

I felt so down and lethargic I went to bed at 8.30pm yesterday evening and struggled to get out of bed this morning.

I went to work today looked around and thought "f**k 'em". I just done my job and didn't worry about hitting targets at work or anything. Who cares if our manager gave us all a hard time again?

Somehow the day went okay. And I've made inroads into my pile of post and emails that needed attention. I'm not finished yet.

Edins of Havant

, , , ...

Every other week I get a weekday off of work. The downside to this is that I am then required to work on Saturday. I had today off and as such am scheduled to work Saturday - although I have booked this Saturday off for a wedding. A downside for my wife Gloria is that she was not off from work today. She works split shifts so at least we had the afternoon together.
