Photography. Linux. Life. Me.

I should be studying right now...

...but my concentration lacks. I have to do some philosophy (Hume), but the text is hard to read... It is written in an odd font, in such way it seems that Tweety wrote it. Take a little look...

Well, let's continue. Later some more news!

Spring!!! - And choosing...

, , , ...

Meteorologists state that the first of March is the first day of spring. YAHOO! And I'd seen the first flower last monday. So... I thought the time was right to take my sunglasses, swimsuit and goggles out of the closet. How wrong could I be! When I took the train back to Zwolle today, I arrived in a complete chaos. The busstation was overcrowded with buses that didn't go anywhere, the street was jammed with cars... And loads of desperate people trying to get home. What a bit snow can do! I decided to try to walk home.

Yeah, you scandinavians, you all wil laugh about this situation. The whole system is jammed because of three (3!) centimeters of snow...

But Hey.... HELLOOOOO!:eyes:

It is spring!! The season where everything should be freshly green, not white!!!

Anyhow...

Now it's time for something else... Choices.
Now the Netherlands is going the (neo?)liberal direction, things have changed (and still are changing any further). Last year we were for the first time ever allowed to buy our energy from another provider. (Before that, it were state-companies). Several months later the public health sytem has got changed. What meant that I had until er... today (!) to choose a insurance-company to cover my health. It appeared to be a tough job: make a selection of tons and tons of proposals, sometimes even different proposals from one and the same company. And since those contracts are on a year-basis, I wanted to make a wise decision. It took me four full days to make up my mind. I must say: it took some lots of time, but I'm satisfied with my decision.

So I've made enough choices for now??? Didn't think so.

Next week (7th of March), there are municipality elections. And to be honest: I havn't any clue what to vote. Will it be some local party? Or the local department of a national party? That it will be something on the left wing, thát is for sure. I guess I'll make up my mind next weekend.
Television-polls say only 57% of the Dutch will give their vote. That's a big, big shame. I guess a lot of those non-voters are just tired of choosing. Choosing abstract things as politics, insurance and so on about four times a year is a little too much, I think.
But in my opinion, when you HAVE voting-rights, you have to vote, or be silent for the next four years (until the next election). Right... I cannot be silent in Politics that long. Nobody can!

Career...
Next friday I'm going to a career-event. Never been there though. I'm curious: don't know what to expect. Loads of people in suit (including me), that's for sure. But what wil happen...? I'll try to go there for a chat with some recruiters. Especially I'll try to talk to some people outside the advocacy, to figure out what just 'ordinary companies' can mean to me whan I've got my LLM-degree somewhere between september and december.

Music
I've figured out some new artist. At least, He's new in The Netherlands. I'm talking about Gabriel Rios, A Puerto Rican guy from Gent, Belgium. He writes very nice songs, with a little bit fragile but positive sound. His breaktrough in Holland was his awesome song 'Broad day light' that was used for a Dutch orangejuice-commercial...

Maybe it is a bit soft, (probably a bit gay-ish as well), but I really like his music.

spring???

I've just spotted the first brave flower of the year. Made my day good after all... the rest of today was a bit sloppy, due to some computer-trouble (Why don't those websites work when I need it!).

This moment I'm having college (insane as well: it's almost midnight!) for one more hour.
I get back soon with more substantive posts: college is going to continue...

Bloody Shame...

I've tried Opera 9. Very, very very very very VERY nice browser... I've got used to it. And that was... well.. a stupid action of me...

Since 'they' have changed many key-combinations (and prefer keys above a mouse), I can't get used to opera 8.5 any more. There are little bugs in opera 9 (copy-paste malfunction in forms... not so nice when I want to copy some text from one form-field (gmail-spellcheck!!!) to another (new blog post): it just doesn't work.

Anyhow, for the time beïng, until opera 9 gets released, it will be Camino for me... :zip:

A while ago...

, , ,

So... That's a while ago... Last few days I wasn't too active around here. Why? Well... I dunno. Can't say I am that busy.

I have to finish my latest two courses before my internship. I'm doing philosophy (Descartes, Spinoza, Locke, Nietzsche and so on) and one latest law-course. The rest of the time I'm trying to find a subject for a paper. I've to write one (only 30 pages, so not a too big issue) directly after my internship. It's convenient to have a subject before that internship starts: If I can manage to get a subject before April, and sacrifice summer holidays, it will be possible (but an awful job) to finish my study in September.

So.. that for my study. For the rest I'm looking around for a new sport. I liked (well, I still like) rowing a lot. I love it, actually. But the rowing club in the city I live in is nothing for me. They haven't any other guys of my age, or at least other guys of my age that want to row as fanatic as I want.
It is hard to find a sport that suits me. I'm not so talented with ballgames, so volleyball, soccer, tennis etcetera won't do. I can't manage to react to the ball the way I should. Like my eye don't understand what's going on. Anyway, I'm thinking of swimming right now. Maybe I should give it a try. Or windsurfing, but that requires a bunch of money (board, sails) and loads of space to store the equipment. Don't have that both. So.. swimming seems the best option so far.

Last weekend me and my friend went to my parents. We had a really good time. I helped my dad with his website. He is member of a foundation that maintains a small 19th century house that is nowadays a meeting-centre for bridge clubs and choirs and things like that. That foundation wants a website. And not that I'm such a good web designer, but I can do some simple things to make it a workable non-time consuming site, now their budget is more or less zero.
We went to the building to make some photo's for the website. We were planning to use his digicam, but when we arrived he discovered he hadn't any place left on his memory card. Too bad. So we used my cellphone. Its 2 mp camera and Photoshop can do a lot for website-pics. I am SO glad I have this unit. It really helped us out here. (and yes: this nice little house on the right is in fact the place I'm talking about)
In spring or summer, we've planned to do another photoshoot, when the trees around the building have leaves again...

Spinoza and a boggled mind...

I'm in the train right now: getting back from Arnhem, where I picked up my new suit. I should read some Spinoza philosophy stuff right now. That won't work: Difficult text in a noisy train with a boggled mind isn't a good idea.

Meanwhile, my mind is making me crazy today. Don't know why, though. I think I have an off-day or something. The rest of today, I'll hide and duck.

Late X-mas holidays...

, , ,

Since my X-mas days were messed-up with studying for loads of exams, I had my xmas-holidays last week.

I've had much fun! I've emptied my bank-account and bought a suit for my internship with my sister. It was awesome! I had a really good time and on the end a fantastic Hugo Boss suit. I'll get it next thursday.

And I've re-designed my website. A new layout and navigation. Not finished yet, but a lot better as it was, I think.

What's cooking?
This weekend I celebrated my birthday with my 'in-laws' (no, I'm not married, but it's clear who I mean, isn't it?). They bought together a new oven and a very good frying pan. I like cooking and my 40 years old oven, formerly used by my grandma, broke down in November. It's hard to live without an oven, if you appear to be a oven-fetisjist. I appeard to be one.. But now I can use my oven again!! Yesterday I've tried to make cake. Sounds easy, but there is always a catch... It worked out decent, but next time I've to adjust some things to make it better. Next week I'll try again...

And then that frying pan!!! WOW!!! That unit without disturbing Teflon-layer is really heavyduty. I can go really wild in the kitchen from now... nice!

Soccer for me..
Time for a confession. I really don't like soccer. At all. When it is World Cup time and Holland turns orange, i'ld like to hide and duck until it is over. Or move over to a place without cabletv. Yesterday my friend came home with a brand new GameCube. You know, that Nintendo console system. It came with a game included: Mario Smash Football. This is really no soccer whatsoever. Just forget all rules and play this insane game! I like this! It is really big fun. A new addiction is born, I'm affraid.

Refugee
I finally found the song that intrigued me a lot. It appeared to be Refugee, by Oi Va Voi. Who? Oi Va Voi. Never heard of them, but I've heard Refugee some times and I liked that. My sister had bought the CD of Oi Va Voi. It is a brilliant piece of work. Not to easy to hear, maybe, but really intriguing. It MUST come in my collection, when I have a car with radio/CD system. Because that's what it is: perfect music while driving. Oi va voi is todays recommendation :-)

Mac virus...

Hell no... I havn't found the first (effective) virus for OSX.

The virus in this case is inside me. I'm a HUGE Apple fan. I like the looks of the hardware, but even more the convenience of the software. It's so damn simple! My computer has become an article like a toaster or a coffee-machine. It always works, it does what I ask him to do, just perfect!

Anyhow, that virus is spreading!:alien:

While my mother happily using my old G4 system (I had no space left for that machine since I moved to another appartment), my friend just got his first Powerbook yesterday... I must say, his second hand Powerbook G4 impressed me a lot! What a powerfull machine! What a sparkling tft-screen! What a design!
Gimmegimmegimme!

But, hey!If you don't want to make the switch.... don't come too close!
