1. Window Mounted Air conditioning units: - Also known as box units or window units, these are the big cube looking units mostly seen sticking out of a side of an apartment wall or a window. These units are economical way to air condition a single room in a house. These are available in both cooling only and cooling and heating options. Disadvantage of these units is that these can only cool or heat certain specific range of area or room they are installed in. Moreover these units are extremely noisy and big in size.
2. Split air conditioning units or ductless wall splits - Wall split air conditioning units look like a long thin box that sits on your wall. These types of units come in both cooling only or heating and cooling both options. Similar to window units, these units can only be relied upon to air condition the room they are installed in. However these are great cheap options although a little more expensive than a window AC.
3. Central Air Conditioning/Reverse Cycle (Ducted) - Ducted reverse cycle central air conditioning systems are the best systems that are potential enough to heat or cool about half of your home at any one time. These units are fairly reliable providing you with more precise level of comfort all around the year. One major disadvantage of such units is that these systems are very expensive to get installed by an air conditioning installer and run for longer hours. As mentioned previously, they usually only have enough capacity to run about half your home at one time which can be a problem if most the rooms are being occupied.
4. Evaporative Air Conditioner (Ducted) - Evaporative coolers are an excellent way to air condition your entire home very easily. The cost incurred in installing and running these units is relatively cheaper. The only disadvantage of such systems is that they cannot offer any heating and circulate a lot of moisture and pollutants into your home.
5. Portable Air Conditioning Units – This type of air conditioners are usually found at various local department stores. These units are comparatively cheap and easy to find. However, these systems can be extremely costly to run and do very little to actually cool or heat a room. I would not recommend purchasing such units if you can invest to purchase a system that actually works!
