AUSTRIA - The typical Philippine parol (Christmas lantern) is one of the main attractions of the Christkindlmarkt (Christmas-Market) in Oberperfuss, Tyrol, located in the western province of Austria. Oberperfuss is a tourist village near Innsbruck, Austria.
In the ceremony that took place in Oberperfuss, the lanterns were officially presented to town Mayor Magister Ewald Spiegl and Tyrol Governor Günter Platter in the presence of Austrian Foreign Minister, Dr. Michael Spindelegger, and the Honorary Consul of the Philippines to Tyrol and Vorarlberg, Dr. Christian Traweger.
The local newspaper in Oberperfuss reported that the traditional Filipino Christmas lanterns will decorate the historic Peter Anich building. Peter Anich was a famous farmer cartographer from Oberperfuss (1723-1766) who was born in Oberperfuss.
The Philippine Embassy announced that the lights of the lanterns will be illuminated for the opening of the famous Christmas market, and will delight the people and guests in Oberperfuss during the entire December.
One of the lanterns will be auctioned during the biggest charity event in Austria - “Licht ins Dunkel" (Light amidst Darkness) which is being staged every Christmas. The event is aired over by the Austrian Broadcasting Company ORF-Tirol.
The Philippine Embassy first introduced the Philippine Parol into Viennese Christian traditions in 2006, when it opened a Parol exhibit at a prominent Viennese Palmenhaus (tropical greenhouse) in an event that also commemorated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Philippines-Austrian diplomatic relations.
