Much ado about nothing...

Why are people so drawn to things that have so little meaning when looked at in general? Why are Kenyans being swept up in the referendum euphoria over things like Kadhi courts & abortion which wont really affect them in their day to day lifes. The thing to be asking in my opinion is how easy\hard it will be to change the new constitution once its passed, issues concerning the changes in local government...stuff like that. I dont know much about politics, but i do not see what people are so riled up about over kadhi courts & abortion...

Did i not just post about non issues za the draft constitution! Ive just been given a pamphlet titled "10 REASONS WHY I WILL VOTE NO AT THE REFERENDUM". It says here at the back that it comes from the Kenya Christian Church Leaders...and i have to say that they are just full of sh*t! Let me get home to my copy of the draft constitution coz they are deliberately misinforming people...ill post some more on this later this evening...

Ok, their first reason is that the current draft allows application of international agreements & treaties without approval by parliament through Article 2(6). Their fears are that those agreements may end up being "unbiblical" (read same sex marriages). The new constitution clearly defines marriage in section 45(2) i.e Every adult has the right to marry a person of the OPPOSITE SEX , based on the free consent of the parties. This does not exactly outlaw homosexuality, but then if we left it to the xtians they would demand a clause banning sex outside marriage...smile
In any case, they have access to Section 257 to amend perceived loopholes.

Their 2nd gripe is with Section 8 which states; There shall be no state religion. According to them, it should be written down as; "State and religeon shall be separate". Apparently writing it that way will "prevent laws that favour one religeon against others"(???) I dont even get their line of argument.

The third issue is that the draft allows the government to favour some religeons through Section 8. IMHO this is pure FUD.

Fourth issue is that the draft takes away their right to preach\evangelize through Section 32. This is some more bullsh*t, coz Section 32(2) states that; Every person has the right, either individually or in community with others, in public or in private, to manifest any religeon or belief through worship, practice, teaching, or observance, including observance of a day of worship.

Fifth issue is that the draft takes away the right of Kenyans to convert from one religion to another, and they once again point to Section 32.This is wrong coz the very first clause in Section 32 states: Every person has the right to freedom of conscience, religion, thought, belief and opinion.

Their sixth reason is clearly meant to misinform, but ill get to it tommorow coz right now im tired...
