Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company, the global giant in tire and rubber manufacturing that is known for tires like the Goodyear Fortera SilentArmor considers "13" as their lucky number. Frank Seiberling, an American inventor, founded the company in 1898. The original manufacturing plant was built in Akron, Ohio, and had only 13 employees, who all played important roles in making the company's earliest products: carriage and bicycle tires, rubber horseshoe pads, and poker chips.
Many people are unaware that Charles Goodyear, the inventor of vulcanized rubber in 1839, was not related to, or connected in any way to the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company. The company was, however, named in honor of this important invention, that Mr. Seiberling felt was a major addition to the automobile and rubber industry.
It wasn't until 1901 that the Goodyear company got its biggest break; this was the year that Goodyear agreed to supply racing tires to an up-and-coming car-racing firm known as Ford Motor. That was the year that Henry Ford, renowned auto designer, put Goodyear tires on his revolutionary car, the Model T. And the rest, as they say, was history. By 1909 Goodyear was manufacturing aircraft tires, which made the Goodyear a renowned brand name around the world.
By 1926, Goodyear was recognized as the largest rubber manufacturer in the world. When people in the auto industry thought of racing tires back then, they thought of Goodyear as the producer of the highest quality, most effective brand available. From there, Goodyear's tires popularity expanded, and thanks to their popularity, the company experienced additional growth in the industry.
Goodyear developed into a multinational corporation, and then branched out into other areas of business. The company opened a nuclear processing facility in Ohio in 1956. In the 1970s, the Goodyear Aerospace Corporation was formed and later became the Goodyear Aircraft Company, which specialized in the design and manufacturing of various types of aircraft, including the famed space shuttle. Like any company seeking healthy expansion, Goodyear devoted a huge amount of time and money to making-over the original facility in Akron to be a research and design technical center for the company.
Over the decades, Goodyear has been responsible for a great number of successful inventions and innovations. Goodyear now stands as a true global conglomerate, and one which has delved into a wide range of very profitable and significant ventures.
Third only to global leaders Bridgestone and Michelin, Goodyear is one of the largest makers of tires. People normally have Goodyear on their minds when they need tires for their cars because of the amazing history for which the company has been responsible.
