The first thing that you should look to get when you are thinking about creating a beat making unit is a really fast computer. Although there are some producers who rely heavily on keyboards and drum machines, these days you need to have a computer to make it. I cannot stress this enough... the faster the computer, the better! My computer has four processors and a ton of memory. It also has a massive amount of storage space for all of my high quality WAV audio files. Why do I need such an expensive computer? The answer is simple, audio production.
When you are making your rap beats you will be using software that takes up a lot of your computers resources. Its true that computers are getting faster and faster everyday and crazy new technology is coming out all the time... however these days it is still crucial to have a beat making machine that can handle 10-40 separate audio tracks playing and recording at the same time with tons of filters, plug ins, etc. If you don't have a fast computer, it will simply crash and you will lose all your hard work.
The next thing that you must get is some sort of software that can make the actual rap beats. There are tons of options out there: Fruity Loops, Pro Tools, Logic, and more. These pieces of software will allow you to loop audio files and create rap beats from scratch. However, the program itself does not come with the audio files and plug ins, you will need to get all these separately.
When you get to the point where you have a computer, software, and the sounds/plug ins, you will be pretty much ready to construct rap beats from home. A couple things that are optional but I highly recommend are: top quality head phones and good studio monitors. The higher quality audio that you are listening to when you are making the rap beats, the better. If you are listening to your music on stock speakers you will not know what your music really sounds like. Trust me, I learned the hard way.
