747 Wing house in California

, ,

Hi, thanks for stopping by. How was your day?

For me today was a non-event day, but found some interesting news so I just like to share it with you.

I am surprised to find an article by BBC News, on a woman who is going to build her house with elements of a 747 aeroplane. I love architecture so I have seen and read about a number of interesting buildings, but I never seen anything like this before.

Please click here to read the article. (BBC News)
For the details of the design, please click here (Devid Herz architects, details and more pictures of the house are found on 'Works in Progress' page)

There is an interesting program on Channel 4, called 'Grand Design' which documents the property projects of ordinary people with extraordinary visions. I wonder if Kevin McCloud, the presenter of the programme, spotted 747 Wing house and may make an episode for it. According to the article above, the construction of 747 due to begin in June this year. Let's wait and see for more details...

Other than that, I've found some treasures in Opera community. I may introduce you to those if I obtained permissions.

Aha! on breakfast tv

, , ,

This morning Aha! appeared on BBC Breakfast as a guest.
I've never seen Kate happier!! She was beaming, so I guess she must have liked Aha when she was younger. :D

I was shocked Morton still looked so gorgeous, he has the same aura when they had a number one hit years ago...but I could sense something not quite right...I wonder what that is.
Anyway, here is the link to the interview...click and enjoy...:coffee:

My Appalling School Report

, , ,

Hi, how was your day?

Today was the last day of the final term at Japanese Saturday school. BANZAI!!!!!
Until the new school year starts in 5 weeks time, we can have 5 lazy weekends. Isn't it great.

As is usual with the end of term, my children brought home their final school reports. It is marked with scores ranging from A (the best) to C (the worst) and their scores were...Surprise!! Surprise!! I'm happy and proud, not because they got As and Bs, but I could see them finally started making progress with their own effort. And the teachers gave them really encouraging comments. I know how hard it was for them just to stay in the class, as they were studying their second language with Japanese expats' children, most of them lived abroad less than 5 years in total. My children are getting exposure to the language mainly through me typically less than 3 hours a day due to my work and other commitments. Nowadays it is even harder to find time to do their homework from English school. I just like to congratulate them - well done, you two!!

When my daughter was in the 5th grade, I remember receiving private phone calls from her form teacher, who gently suggested that my daughter should quit school so that she would be happier and would not drag the performance of other children in her class. I was deeply hurt then, but I am glad I didn't listen to her. My daughter survived the criticism and both of my children flourished after then.

-------------------------------------------------------

Did any one of you living in the UK, watched BBC2's My Appalling School Report report last night? I was kind of looking forward to watching it, but unfortunately I fell asleep on the sofa while watching a DVD and when woke up, it was NEWS NIGHT.

It is funny how teachers comments would make or break hidden talent and all. I found this Observer article particularly encouraging. Passion matters most. I hope my children find what they want to do in their life while they are still at school and will find a way to pursue it themselves.

Golden Girl

, , , ...

Hi, everyone. My friend told me about the link and I wanted to share it with you.

I feel nothing but respect for Shizuka Arakawa, who won the first Olympics gold medal for Japan in figure skating the other day, as I can imagine a lot of things that might have happened behind the scenes...

Contrary to dabbed comments, she looked she didn't care whether or not she would win as she looked enjoying every moments. It was passion which struck me rather than her determination to win. She seemed so sure of herself, unaffected by anything going on outside arena and skated as if she was the swan in the lake.

Olympics reminds me of the importance to believe in yourself. I can only imagine, but these people have won the fight against themselves, trained themselves and perfected their skills even under some difficult circumstances.

I wonder what my children would think of Olympics as in their world it seems 'uncool' to take things too seriously. Some people see Olympics as the showcase of talents, some see this as nationalists events. I see this as an opportunity to share a miracle moments.

Anyway, hope you enjoy the video as much as I did.

Haunting tv commercial...

, ,

Karuku Ippai told me about this TV commercial long time ago.
Everytime I remember this song, it is hard to get it off my mind.
If you see the video, you probably know what I mean ('haunting' may not be an appropriate word to describe this - please imagine when you play an analog record and a needle keeps jumping on the same spot).

For those of you who read Japanese, click here.
For English speaking readers, please click here. When you see the page, select either real player or windows media player and click the icon, so video playback should start.

Please enjoy!
