Nice weather for a date

"Hi, Thanks for coming a long way! Come this way, I will show you my girl friend."

"Darling, our guests have arrived."

"Let me introduce you to my girlfriend. Doesn't she look beautiful?"

"Well, darling. You look more handsome than anyone else around here."

"Where shall we have tea....Guests are not allowed to come on our lawn....What about over there?"

"Don't worry, darling. We will get our men to serve them tea....:D"

London Open House weekend!

, ,

Hi, how was your weekend?

This weekend was something special. For one, the annual architectural event was held over London.
For two, I held a party for a friend moving back to Tokyo.
I had been busier than usual at work and was a bit under the weather lately, but this weekend was given me a good amount of energy (mentally) .

Last year I couldn't get into Gherkin (Swiss Re building) because the queue was way too long. This year the viewing was strictly limited to booking only. I didn't know that and found out the day before the places were fully booked before the weekend. Never mind, but is there another chance to view the inside of the building or listen to the talks by the architect next year? According to The Times, Swiss Re Tower has been put up for sale for at least 600 million pounds!! Who could afford it???, I am interested.

So, this year, due to the time available I focused only on two buildings, Channel 4 Headquarters and Richard Rogers Partnership. I was so excited to be able to go into Sir Richard's studio. The studio offered a guided tour, so it was fulfilling and stimulating experience for me. I wish similar event was held in Tokyo too. I have added a couple of albums and you find them here. I will upload the photographs of RR studio sometime soon!

For the party, there were 10 of us, but it was a potluck party so that we all had fun over drinks and nibbles.
The party started aound 8pm but lasted until 3am....you probably wonder how we could sustain conversation that long, but we did. The only snag was that I felt my age more than the last time we had such party.
I probably need to start some sort of work out.

Anyway, tomorrow will be a public holiday (Respect the Aged day) in Japan. I've come to realize that I am lucky to have both my parents in good health. I think they are leading much healthier lifestyle than us, a kind of low calorie (similar to, but not strictly micro-biotic) diet and exercise...

Live long and prosper :spock:

Why do you call it 'Rough'?

, ,

Childrearing is a challenge like no other (for me, sigh).

Well, Ulie and Mikey, we have had some arguments since the beginning of the new school year.
Do you know parents too get nervous, like you do?
I have lived long enough so that I could see what is coming next, and guess what you have been going through, and couldn't help but giving you some advice.
I know parents should trust children and be patient, but sometimes I get a feeling of not doing enough, worry and fear overwhelm me.
Hope you do understand how much I love you, though I am not good at showig my love and affection all times.
I am learning, too.

Anyway, Ulie, watch this and I think you will like it.

Morris dancing

,

Hi, how was you weekend?

It was such a lovely day and we went for a drive. I wanted to go to the seaside town, but we just got lost so that we stopped at a village and had a break in a pretty cafe. Then we saw this. It was the first time for me to watch Morris dance, though I have heard of it before, and kids have seen it before on tv. Knee high socks with full of small bells, hankies, and colourful hats. Watching jolly dancing made me happy

Although there was another excellent dance by two women who were weaing wooden boots, my camera went all blury and couldn't catch the image. They looked so sweet!

Hi, How was your weekend?

First of all, thank you for warm messages and PMs - Final good-bye is set on Tuesday. I am slowly getting over the experience...It would be a shame if we stay miserable forever, as she hated such attitudes after all.

Good news on Opera land - congratulations Aya for becoming the member of the week. I love a coziness in her place where people of all ages and nationality pop in for a chat. I hope it would stay like that.

Great feature on Opera land - in case you haven't, please take a look at Offspring's album on India. Superb pictures to take your breath away.

New additions to Opera treasure chest - Try speaking English! by Kenji Beautiful travel blog...his entry on Okinawa made me all jealous. I wish I could go to Okinawa!

On Saturday, The times had a feature called Offbeat Japan. It covered quite extensive topics from Anime (Manga), women's only relaxation rooms, gangsters, etc. Unfortunately the music column only featured Orangerange, but there are a lot more.

I will not be able to post for the coming weeks, here are Hirokichi_uk mix of J-pops. Enjoy!

Signal---->Steppers' delight----->World's End Super Nova----->YES!----->Bluebird.

Thanks laics, hisakome, minato2006, zzzzz9 and Stuffarley for the videos.

Hopefully a new post will resume after mid August. Hope all of you have a wonderful summer!

Rest in Peace

Countdown has started - in eight days we will be in Japan. I should be feeling happy, but something significant happened today that would overshadow whatever happen running up to it.

An ex-colleague of mine died of cancer yesterday. I don't know her exact age, but probably around 50. The news was so out-of-blue, and when I opened the mail from a friend telling me that, my mind rejected what was written on. I just couldn't and cannot believe it!

She was a lot senior than I am, and for the 4 years or so we worked in the same building (for different companies in the same group, we used to go out for lunch, chatted on the way home on a train and all. As I left work for having kids, we went for the separate path, but we got in touch after years, through a mutual friend when I started working again in London.

I remember her as a person with strong and straight-forward character with a very sharp tongue. She was always very positive, objective, criticised people a lot but laughed about hardships. She was also a character easily misunderstood, or feared, but once you got to know he you would see boldness of her speech was in fact masking her gentle soul. She used to tease me saying a child was bringing up children, which was quite right at times as I didn't know anything about bringing up children.

The last time I saw her was about 14 months ago. It was a chance meeting at a train station, and she was telling me a rosy story of retiring in Croatia... and it seems it was the last place she spend her holiday, as she died in her husband's arms after she came back from the holiday...

At the time of writing this, her face flashes in front of me, and she is smiling....laughing very loudly. Though I can even hear her melodic laugh, but I cannot recall her whinging or depressed face. Probably her husband was the only person to whom she showed her weakness.

I heard the cause of her death was stomach cancer. I only wish I had contacted her... She is leaving her husband and her sister. RIP, Noriko. I secretly admired your strength.

Boys day in London

, ,

Hi, how was your weekend?

Ulie came back from Switzerland Saturday morning at 9:30ish. She talked about what she did non-stop for about half an hour, then went up to her bedroom, slept 8 hours straight!!! I could vaguely imagine what she was up to, while she was away. She bought me a cheese named Appenzeller, a washed-type cheese. Though it was tasty, the smell was something else. You can even smell it from 100 meters away! (It reminded me of Taleggio, but Appenzeller smelled even stronger!)

Anyway, Ulie is like a typhoon.

Today we went out to please a boy in our household. The weather was very nice, and we had fun watching classic cars to modern cars, as well as some cars used in famous films.

So here are some of the photographs we took...Starting from my mother's house (not!)

I wanted to take a picture of the Wallace and Gromit Pest control car, but my camera was too slow so I could only capture a little (between the kids).

Royal Academy of Arts shows a huge statue of woman...a bit grotesque.

The last one is for Aya. This is the way Wasabi sells its sushi - all wrapped up in clear films.
