With eleven active years behind him the dark Basconian warrior known as Eol returns with his fourth chapter titled ‘Unblessed Woods.’ As usual Elffor is without a label and thus his work has been self released again and limited to just five hundred copies which sold out in two months. So just getting your hands on a copy of this album is going to be a little tricky, but fortunately there are some copies still floating around on eBay.

Elffor’s last release introduced a lot more black metal aspects to the music, but Unblessed Woods is surely Eol’s blackest offering to date. In fact the album largely forgoes a lot of the folky/medieval sounds and occasional clean vocals that were present in the past three offerings in favor of a much more heavily synth laden black metal experience. This time around there’s plenty of brutal drumming and heavy riffing alongside the atmospheric synths and Eol’s agonizing screams.

What I found to be a tad annoying about the album is that on several places the drumming is generally just fast double bass pounding away with barely any other parts of the drums being hit. So lots of times what you hear is super fast double bass, distorted guitars, synths, and screams, and somehow it just doesn’t sound right to me. Fortunately Eol’s one of the best at creating a dark atmosphere through his music and indeed this album retains that same dark feeling that has been present in previous releases. So a plus in that spot, but what also bothers me about the album is that there really isn’t any single song that sticks out from the pack. I mean there good songs and all, but just not really the type of songs that I’d want to rip and put on my mp3 player to listen to often.

Hopefully on the next album Eol will bring back the beautiful folk and medieval music that he blended in so perfectly on past releases or otherwise I think Elffor may lose some of the uniqueness that the band surely had in the past. Unblessed Woods while having some good moments here and there will unfortunately just remain as one of those albums that I’d probably just throw on every now and then if I’m desiring some dark atmospheric black metal.

Elffor - From the Throne of Hate - 2004

Band - Elffor
Title - From the Throne of Hate
Label - Self Released
Format - Unknown
Download Format: MP3/Quality: 256KBPS/44.1Hz/Joint-Stereo
Year - 2004
Genre - Atmospheric Black Metal/Pagan Folk
Country - Spain

TrackList:

01. Old 7:39
02. Rare Woods 5:54
03. My Hateful End 5:00
04. Echoes Of The Past 4:09
05. Upon The Barbarian Woods 5:39
06. Grimmest Winternights 7:32
07. The Essence Of Hate 4:31
08. Wicked Shadows 5:09

Three self financed albums deep into his solo project, Eol returns in 2004 with a new album titled ‘From the Throne of Hate.’ Just like his previous effort ’Son of the Shades’ Eol once again delivers a splendid album of ambient, folk, medieval, pagan, and black metal influenced music. The last album was his first to really introduce the metal influences and they were still somewhat minimal, and the less than stellar production made the riffs hard to decipher. Fortunately things have changed on From the Throne of Hate since the production is considerably better, the guitar riffs are actually hearable, and its seems Eol has taken the band sounds more in the vein of Summoning, while of course still keeping Elffor’s old sound intact. The music is still largely keyboard based while the drums and guitars take more of a backseat approach, but are still easily heard and are not overpowered too much by the keyboards. Eol’s vocals remain the same standard black metal screams with somewhat of a Burzum-ish touch to them at times, and the clean vocals are somewhat absent from the album. So besides the metal influences becoming more apparent in his music not much has changed with Elffor.

What I do really enjoy about this release though is the dark synths, folk, and medieval music, which is seamlessly integrated into these songs. The folk and medieval moments are very beautiful, the keyboards are dark and epic sounding, and with the music becoming more black metal influenced you can bet your ass this is one hell of an album. In particular I like ‘Upon the Barbarian Woods,’ which features some of his best keyboard work and towards the middle of the song you can hear a strong early Emperor influence. ‘Echoes of the Past’ & ‘Wicked Shadows’ are also very medieval epic keyboard pieces, which sound just fantastic. Also ‘My Hateful End’ is probably the most metal sounding song on the album opening with fast double bass drumming, guitar, vile screams, and dark atmospheric synths.

All in all a very strong release, which will definitely appeal to the Summoning fans, but also for those that just enjoy heavily keyboard driven atmospheric black metal. To bad for you though since this release has already sold out. Maybe someday someone will notice this incredible band...

Elffor - Son Of The Shades - 2002

Band - Elffor

08. Unholy Gleam 5:47

It’s been four lengthy years since Elffor’s debut album ‘Into the Dark Forest.’ While the first album was in a way just a typical dark ambient record ‘Son of the Shades’ is so much more. Yes the music is indeed still dark ambient, but the compositions are so much more elaborate and beautiful sounding that this album completely mesmerizes me every time I listen to it. Once again the synth work is very dark and haunting and it has this enchanting wintry feeling to it that makes me feel as if I was standing alone in a snow covered forest late at night. Elffor greatly increases this feeling even further by adding lots of nature samples to the music, which upon closing your eyes one can picture themselves in some forlorn icy land. A feeling that’s hard to fully describe, but is simply flawless in its delivery.

Of course for some people dark ambient music has its limitations so fortunately Elffor gathered some friends to contribute with some additional instruments. This time around the record includes Basque traditional instruments such as the alboka, txalaparta, and tobera plus an oboe, guitars and drum machine were used. Through the use of these instruments the music becomes all the more elaborate and thus making Elffor one very distinctive musical entity. Another nice thing is the vocals, which alternate from grim black metal vocals to spoken word vocals to epic like choirs. Although the vocals are kept to a minimum, but the beautiful music more than makes up for it.

Overall ‘Son of the Shades’ is an extremely innovative piece of music that will easily capture the hearts of fans of medieval, folk, or pagan influenced music. Unfortunately though the album was self-released once again and as you might have guessed has already sold out. With any luck I hope a label will re-release this band’s music some day as such truly original music should not go unheard.
