Since 1987 MCIL has been the center of a network of measures, information, and resources to help people with disabilities to conquer the barriers, the isolation along with the dependency. We encourage you to work with us to build that new accessible welcoming neighborhood, learn from neighbors or teach fellow citizens that will be struggling for their autonomy.
Confronting Discrimination
People using disabilities face paternalism, remoteness, and discrimination. Locating affordable, accessible housing is not an easy task in the Memphis Area. For people with physical disabilities with accessibility needs, our program can facilitate your home modification process. The housing program could be the direct result of MCIL's perseverance to systems advocacy. In 2006 the center working with the US Department of Justice won a discrimination complaint against local developers who violated the ADA and Truthful Housing Act. Once modified in order to satisfy people's needs, tenants with disabilities usually remain in housing a long time, and are not as controlled by pressure of an costly institution or government funded housing programs.
