Whenever you are starting a business, generating revenue is always in the back of your mind. Often times I get asked, if you don't have a large amount of money to draw from in the beginning to start your business, what are some cost efficient ways to get started?
Now, everyone's situation is different and therefore there is not one set answer. What I will suggest is some ideas and insights that I used when I was starting my own business, deep in student debt and right out of university.
Coming from just graduating university, I didn't have any money, contacts or experience marketing products. When I am in a desperate situation, that is when I become the most creative. My situation left me desperate, which gave my a huge opportunity to be extremely creative. This is exactly what I encourage you to tap into.
Finding creative ways to get people's attention is something you have to do when you are just getting started. You also have to find creative ways to build relationships. Creating products and ways to market those products are also other avenues in which you will have to be creative.
The key to this whole scenario is utilizing that creativity to build momentum in an effective way.? In the beginning you are going to ask yourself what is most important to me at this time. Is it generating revenue? Is it building a list? Is it creating a product?
At this particular time in your career you really need to get focused on what is important to you and maximize your creativity to its full extent. When I first started out, was generating revenue important? Yes, of course, but I also knew building a long term profitable business was more important.
I was willing to sacrifice early profits for long-term gains and the way I did that was I gave a lot of my time in exchange for products, in exchange for services, in exchange for JV opportunities, in exchange for all kinds of thing.
I utilized the time I did have and started volunteering at and for anyone I could. Any help someone needed marketing, I would do. I would write for people. I would volunteer at events. Although this did not give me immediate profits, what I was doing was building relationships with key people, who would help my career in the long run.
Of course the beginning is going to be a little bit harder and you will have to strain your creative juices, but when you really focus down on what you want, you can use that creativity to get what you want.
The problem for many is they don't do this, then they end up going in circles. When you are starting out I really want to encourage you to really think about what you are looking to do. Do you want to generate revenue? If yest, find creative methods to generate revenue in a short period of time.
If you are not so much concerned about generating revenue immediately but you are more interested in developing relationships for long-term profitability, then you want to focus on creative ways to connect with people, to build those relationships and to get to know others.
It all comes down to figuring out what you should be focusing on right now. Building your list, may be your priority. If so, set your attention on that and find creative ways to build your list.
When starting your business off on a tight budget, you really have to focus down into what you are looking to do and accomplish. Secondly, really tap into your creativity, it will move you beyond your excuse of not having money to do something and help you find alternative solutions to get by. It may take a little longer or seem different, but once you find your creative side the end is limitless.
