Nothing Compares to Old School....
Thursday, 22. June 2006, 06:58:02
The site contains a collection of the most romantic classic poems ever.
Have a look Romantic Poems - Classics
It also has a section of Famous Love Letters. My favorite letter is by Napoleon Bonaparte to his wife Josephine, Napoleon's Love Letter
Sooooo sweeeet!!!
Anyway, here's some of my favorite poems.
Because She Would Ask Me Why I Loved Her
by Christopher Brennan (1870-1932)
If questioning would make us wise
No eyes would ever gaze in eyes;
If all our tale were told in speech
No mouths would wander each to each.
Were spirits free from mortal mesh
And love not bound in hearts of flesh
No aching breasts would yearn to meet
And find their ecstasy complete.
For who is there that lives and knows
The secret powers by which he grows?
Were knowledge all, what were our need
To thrill and faint and sweetly bleed?
Then seek not, sweet, the "If" and "Why"
I love you now until I die.
For I must love because I live
And life in me is what you give.
When We Two Parted
by Lord Byron (1788 - 1824)
When we two parted
In silence and tears,
Half broken-hearted
To sever the years,
Pale grew thy cheek and cold,
Colder, thy kiss;
Truly that hour foretold
Sorrow to this.
The dew of the morning
Sunk, chill on my brow,
It felt like the warning
Of what I feel now.
Thy vows are all broken,
And light is thy fame;
I hear thy name spoken,
And share in its shame.
They name thee before me,
A knell to mine ear;
A shudder comes o'er me...
Why wert thou so dear?
They know not I knew thee,
Who knew thee too well..
Long, long shall I rue thee,
Too deeply to tell.
In secret we met
In silence I grieve
That thy heart could forget,
Thy spirit deceive.
If I should meet thee
After long years,
How should I greet thee?
With silence and tears.
Here's some links to more of my favorites:
I held a Jewel by Emily Dickinson
Sweet Disorder by Robert Herrick
Tell me not sweet by Richard Lovelace
Love Sonnet XLV by Pablo Neruda
Shall I compare Thee by William Shakespeare (a collection of romantic poems can never be complete without Shakespeare
I hope you enjoy them too....

Great post! This one is a newer, but I think it's great: Made by Richard Brautigan (1935-1984), Called "The wait"
It seemed
like years
before
I picked
a bouquet
of kisses
off her mouth
and put them
into a dawn-colored vase
in
my
heart.
But
the wait
was worth it.
Because
I
was
in love.

I wanted to leave a voice comment on here, but it wouldn't let me.
I thought the Christopher Brennan poem had a really nice flow,
so I plugged my little travel microphone in and turned it into a song.
I'll post it on my page.
Melissa # 24. June 2006, 09:28
I cannot count how many times I've listened to your song today
You've turned it from one of my favorite poems to one of my favorite songs...
Hey, and I even know all the words to the song too
I suggest everyone should visit your blog and listen to it
Thank you for a beautiful comment.
I think the song sounds brilliant!

I'm glad you liked Napoleon's love letter.
My favorite bit of the letter is "Until then, mio dolce amor, a thousand kisses; but give me none in return, for they set my blood on fire.".... that's romantic
There's another letter he wrote that I like, have a look
In the letter he tells of how very upset he is that she hadn't written him yet
Hey Bob,
I'm so glad to hear from you. Your plans seem to be running smoothly.
It sounds like you having fun... GOOD
Have a safe and a wonderful trip
Later....

Me being a guy, I love 'She Walks In Beauty' by Lord Byron. It is my all-time favourite school-time poem.
Anyways, that is a lovely collection though.
Thanks for the link. I have another poetry site The Poetry can you tell me if it still works? My browsers don't seem to find it on the net... :depressed:
Take care...
S N Roy
P.S: I have never met you, but seen your pics... Trust me when I say, Lord Byron wrote that poem for girls like you and that someone special in my life.
Melissa # 28. June 2006, 08:11
Oh, how sweet, I'm sure your girlfriend is very lucky.
She is obviously very special if you say that poem describes her
As for describing me, well
I really love Lord Byron's literature...
Is this the right site I found, the one you suggested http://www.poetry.com/welcome/welcome.asp ?
It looks very interesting
Thank you.

It's better to be patient than to waste your time on someone that does not deserve it.
I'm sure you'll be reading these poems to someone special very soon

I am familiar with all of these poets
..and here is one by William Shakespear:
Shall I Compare Thee To A Summer's Day?
by William Shakespeare (1564-1616)
Shall I compare thee to a summer's day?
Thou art more lovely and more temperate.
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May,
And summer's lease hath all too short a date.
Sometime too hot the eye of heaven shines,
And often is his gold complexion dimm'd;
And every fair from fair sometime declines,
By chance or nature's changing course untrimm'd;
But thy eternal summer shall not fade
Nor lose possession of that fair thou ow'st;
Nor shall Death brag thou wander'st in his shade,
When in eternal lines to time thou grow'st:
So long as men can breathe or eyes can see,
So long lives this, and this gives life to thee.
....and now from 'Old School' to 'New School' here is one written by lokutus_prime:):
SHADOW IN MY DREAMS
In the first light
of dawn this day
I thought about you,
golden girl,
shadow in my dreams.
Sun, pouring through
the trees,
dapples specks
of amber coins
on to my balcony.
A platform projecting
from the wall.
The ballustrade along
its outer edge
stops me falling,
as I look out
over the valley.
Skyline trees
shiver in emerald
reflection along
the lake.
Call back the night -
you will return to me.
But I must sleep again....
