These days, more and more kids are falling for marketing tactics that encourage them to spend more of their money on things that they see everywhere. Expensive clothes and hi-tech gadgets are just some of the things that you'd find on every other kids' wish list. In fact, the percentage of teenage consumers seem to be increasing every passing day.
It is therefore very important that we, as parents, teach our children the importance of handling money responsibly. There are a lot of other activities that we spend our time on, why not try bonding moments with your kids by teaching them how to be more responsible when it comes to buying things.
You have to show them that money is earned. Kids will greatly put more value towards their money if they worked hard for it. If they're old enough, you can suggest a job for them, or even help them start out a new business. Perhaps they can join you in Nebraska crafting fairs and festivals and open up shop there. Or if they're younger, you should give them simple jobs that they can handle and then get rewarded for it. This reinforces the idea that good work has rewards.
Teach them how to save. You as a parent can show your kids the great advantages of having some savings. Tell them all about banks and how money can grow from interest in savings accounts. This will sure pique their interest. You can also suggest that they start out a college fund for themselves as early as today. It's never too early to prepare for something like that.
Include your kids when you're handling the household budget. Show them how much money goes to where and why. This makes them feel more involved in family decisions and makes them more mature and responsible when handling their own money. It also teaches them how great it is to have a budget and to know exactly where some of their money might be needed and being prepared for anything.
There are plenty other things out there that can teach better money handling to kids and all you have to do is open your eyes to the possibilities. They might not notice it right now, but you're actually helping them become more relevant and responsible adults in the future with these simple lessons.
