Choosing an HTPC

, , ,

So, you've decided you would like an HTPC but don't have any idea where to start. Here are some important considerations to help you get started:

Form factor
Form factor refers to the physical size of a computer system. When integrating an HTPC with your living room, you have to consider where there will be room for it. If it's going in a cabinet or shelf, it always pays to measure the dimensions of where it will go. Then you can match these dimensions against those of any cases or PCs you consider buying.

Aesthetics
Since your HTPC will most likely be on display in your main living area, you should consider how it will look. Do you really want a boxy big PC tower on display? Or will that cool blue case you have seen in the shop actually look that good in your living room? Another consideration is choosing a system or case that blends well with your other HTPC equipment.

Grunt
An HTPC should have enough "grunt" to handle your multimedia needs. There is no point choosing a good looking small form factor PC if it can't get the job done. The systems CPU, RAM and graphics card are all important considerations. It's better to go for high end components if you have the budget for them.

I/O Ports
Because HTPCs are usually hooked up to a number of external devices, it's important to make sure you choose a system that has enough I/O ports. And of the correct type for your external components.

Prebuilt or Custom Built
Many computer enthusiasts like to build their own HTPC. If you don't have any experience with building a PC or simply don't have the time, the good news is that there are many prebuilt PCs that are well suited for use as an HTPC.

Remote Control
An often overlooked HTPC requirement is a remote control. You may find it frustrating if you have setup your new HTPC, everything is running smoothly but you are constantly having to get up to change the volume or skip tracks.

What is an HTPC?

,

An HTPC (Home Theater Personal Computer) is a PC configured for home media requirements. Typically it will be used for watching movies or TV but may also be used for listening to music, playing games or browsing the Internet. An HTPC is usually integrated with other home theater components such as a remote control, television, Blu-Ray player, amplifier and speaker system.
