Hungry Ghost's Daily Diet (TM)

Dec 21 2009. One year already. Hrumph.

The DOS days

,

In which I reminisce (none too fondly) about the the days of 8088 processors...

My first computer was a Packard Bell 8088 running DOS. Remember MS-DOS? Microsoft Disk Operaing System if I remember correctly.

In those days I'd turn the computer on and then go get my first coffee of the morning. Well. This morning, a blast from the past. I've been in for 2 hours and already have had to re-boot my 8 month old computer 5 times.

Why? Because JB2 dropped off some images for me to process and include in a presentation due on Wednesday at 1045; these images are a freaking 150MB each on average, and in some weird format (hrumph. Macheads).

Oh. And JB2 left this morning for Cannes. For. One. MONTH.

This is what's going on at the moment.

  1. click on image
  2. wait 3 minutes for image to load
  3. make change in image
  4. wait 5 minutes for change to take place
  5. save change
  6. wait 3 minutes
  7. repeat 3 - 4 times
  8. computer crashes
  9. reboot
  10. find that changed image is corrupted
  11. repeat process
  12. mutter feck, feck, feck, none too softly under breath
  13. bossman walks by, hears the fecks, looks in, sees my face and leaves

It's going to be a frustrating day.

The rain. She continues. Latest prediction is the end of March before we see sun again. Hrumph. Ah well, that'll just mean that there's mud to run through. Always have to look at the bright side no?

A few hours later:

Was just thinking about the movie I saw with SN (GWS), her seal (hubby) and PJ last night. In search of Mozart. The brat started composing at the age of 5 or thereabouts and died 30 years later. In the intervening years, his musical output consisted of 622 (at least the documented ones) works - of all genres. That's roughly 20 pieces a year, or about 2 a month - give or take a few. Boy. I feel like a slug now. Wouldn't you?

The documentary itself was instructive, but a bit dry and overly-long I thought. Some more judicious editing would have been good. However, the best part was probably they way the pieces, or bits of them (not all) were presented chronologically. It was also interesting which piece the various musicians, historians and performers chose as the "one where the true Mozart emerges", the general thought being that in his earlier years, he was busy assimilating the works and styles of musicians composing before finally emerging with his own voice. Mind you, Mozart would throw in little unexpected bits and pieces into what appeared to be a conventional composition within the framework of the time. Just as interesting, was how (and probably dangerous this) the manner in which some of the performers extrapolated from what was going on in Mozart's life to the music he was writing at the time - it was an eye opener and there are some pieces which I won't listen to in the same way anymore.

Music. So subjective. But so persuasive and mood-inducing.

Right now, I'm listening to the remixes of Moby's Lift Me Up to keep me oing as the images mentioned above haven't been finished yet. Moby right after Mozart. My. I'm complex aren't I?

But at least both their names start with Mo...

Yes, I'm scrabbling for ways in which to procrastinate. Oh dear.

A few more hours later. Ahhhhh. I've just stolen a tea-bag from my colleague Irish breakfast. Well, she does eat tuna straight out of the can on rice-cakes, but doesn't allow me to have bananas in the office. So I feel quite justified in doing so.

Was also successful in beating off WD's greedy little hands (she who wants the red computer too) from my stash of twix bars. Actually didn't even have to beat them off, I just put the bars into a plastic bag and she didn't see them when going through my drawer. Yes, you leave anything edible unlocked in this place, and it'll be eaten while your back is turned.

Right then, really must finish this presentation today before I can go home. Please. If you're out there reading this, message me, contact me, entertain me, feed me, amuse me, bemuse me. Do something to save me. Throw me a lifeline...

Ah, DOS. I'm currently trying to get some old classic games to work (with or without DosBox). I felt quite fond of the old system but then I suppose if I went back now I'd find it frustrating too.

I had to laugh at your comment about things being eaten. When I worked at the Home Office, it was in dire peril of losing absolutely everything. My stationery box was rifled while I was off work with a serious illness. Anything was that was moveable was liable to be stolen. Pens always; it was ill-advised to put them down for a second. I could almost understand that - it was when people standing walking off with chairs that it passed into the surreal :eyes:

Too late for amusements , sorry.

JCL 3. October 2007, 14:45

Who were you beating off?

Anyway, I reckon that Apple is my new company to hate. Recently on some days I even hate them more than Microsoft :yikes: So don't get me started on the Macheads and the Apple fanboys. They seriously suck.

JCL.

P.S. What a coincidence! It has also been raining quite a bit here in Johannesburg and to think we are in two different seasons!

DOS, isn't it great though Adele? There were many things wrong with the system, but I have to say that wordperfect was blazing fast on DOS!

And yes. Food items are popular items in my office - but chairs?! That seems a bit odd....

hungryghost 6. October 2007, 18:01

Never too late for amusment Shan. Ever!

hungryghost 6. October 2007, 18:02

JCL! Franchement!

:D :D

yeah, can't say I'm a big fan of Apple either - there's an implied fanaticism and arrogance about them...(Let the flame wars begin)

And yes, rain, rain, and more rain!

How are things with you these days?
