Hungry Ghost's Daily Diet (TM)

Dec 21 2009. One year already. Hrumph.

Time

In which time has never been this confusing...

Weather today: Sunnyish with some clouds, but cool. High of 9C, low of 4C with wild winds from last night finally dying away.

Time I: I have three clocks in the apartment, two watches, and three other time pieces (computer, MP3 player, phone) and none of them have the right time. Very annoying. I think that my watch is the most accurate, but am not entirely sure. It'll be a sleepless night for sure.

Maybe I should just give up and not sleep. Have a cuppa Joe and write profound nonsense.

Time II: I was accused of not keeping time recently. This was how it happened, I was told to fill in a Leave of Absence form, which I duly did - then was informed that 1) I'd used up all my holidays for 2009, and 2) that had I kept better tabs of my time, there would have been no need to ask me to fill in the form. I nodded blankly, not quite understanding the bureaucratic imperative that made such requests necessary in the first place. That was two weeks ago. Today, I was asked to fill in the form again, because apparently, I'm away - again even though I was in the office at the time. I refused to touch the form, and said, "I'm working at home". And thus was the die cast. I'm officially working at home now. After all if SlackD can have a week off, so can I. And after all, home is where the heart is, and thank goodness, I have such a mobile heart. Pitter-pattering all over the place. Simply pitter-pattering away - cue the Dido song, Life for Rent. La, la, la.

There was a little twinge of guilt, but that was easily squelched after replaying the conversation I had with Dr. Boss on Monday. When will I learn? Speaking to passive aggressive people is no different than speaking to inconsiderate, selfish and thoughtless people. It only frustrates one, and one does not deserve to be frustrated. Rather the contrary. Why am I surrounded by such people? Why? Why? Why?!

Time III: Time will tell - it certainly will. Time will also bleach away the excesses and accretions that blind one's eyes. With time, I'll see more clearly (especially if I also drink more water to hydrate the eyeball) and then I will realize that I was no fool, but that I behaved according to my high standards and didn't compromise. Then when I reached my limits, I acted decisively and not out of any florid Puccinian emotion. No Flora Tosca here, more like Kashiguro. Oh. I do like this thought. It won't be easy at first, but will become easier with time. So forgiving, time. More's the pity, I'm not.

Time IV: "Why mother, that clock is two seconds behind..." And whoosh, we're off on the latest season of Heroes. It started with a bang, and it's proceeding quite nicely. Many thanks to the Shark and Seal for their efforts in keeping my addiction well-fed. I have to agree whole-heartedly with their assessment, "It's a brilliant season! Very good! You'll enjoy it! Watch and then discuss! That's an order!"

Time V: Time to douse the plants in SDS again, the mealybugs are making a comeback, or trying to anyway. However, I now have my syringe and 24 gauge needle filled with 12% alcohol with which to pickle them with surgical precision. They will die. They will not survive my scorched earth, but not leaf, policy. No prisoners will be taken, they only slow the conquest.

Time VI: The time spent with JJB was time well-spent.

Time VII: It's time for bed, or maybe I should just follow my instincts and ignore bed. After all, it's almost midnight and that can be productive time, if you know what you're doing. I suppose though the question is, do I know what I'm doing? Well, this much I know, my gut instincts have never been wrong, and my gut is screaming out at me now. Since I've not ingested any Irinotecan, it can't be 4th-stage gut toxicity so there you go. I shall listen to it and follow its rationale, which is to say, "why ingest poison when you don't have to?"

Utter randomness: They could offer me all the gold in the world, Put me on a ship that's sailing out to sea, set me down on a lonely track, but I'd find a way to come running back...

"Why mother, that clock is two seconds behind..."

I'm a time freak, so I go to time.gov and sync up my clocks there, though the net induces a slight delay, so when I *have time* for greater accuracy, I fire up a shortwave receiver and get the time signal from WWV in Ft. Collins, Colorado or CHU in Ottawa, Ontario. CHU also makes the time announcements in French so you can feel elegant.

The radio signal traveling at the speed of light will still induce a slight delay, but it's less of a delay than the net, so I'm OK with it. The net delay is not insignificant. I often send links by instant messages to my partner right here in the same room. The IM server we use is in Paris, France, and after I hit send, I can hear a delay before it pops up on the computer a few feet away due to the IM having traveled NC-Paris-NC. Sometimes it's just half a second, other times it can be as much as 6 seconds. This would inject a variable in getting time by Internet that a time freak would not like. :D

As for working at home, not that this is your work situation at all, but the last time I was on the beat looking for a job, several places wanted me to work out of my home, and the pay was all commissions and bonuses, no base salary. I'd look at them like, "you don't want to make any commitment to me at all, do ya?"

*sigh*

I guess a leap-second year would be sort of temps perdu. I went to a radio geek New Year's Eve party one time where we listened to WWV do a leap second "double beep" at midnight. It's amazing what I've considered to be interesting at different times of my life.

I probably had my eye on one of the geeks, so it wasn't all bad.

I have a radio clock that I sync everything else to.

It's interesting to watch it update itself, because it can only run forward. So sometimes it takes the mad dashes through 24 hours if it's running fast.

Temps perdus for sure! But recherche, not so sure about that! Somethings are best left sleeping...especially old, wrinkly dogs.

hungryghost 5. November 2009, 23:39

That's too funny Dave..and did your heart skip a beat whether due to the leap year or to one of the geeks? :D :D

hungryghost 5. November 2009, 23:43

I sync to CBC time myself :D

Mick-E 5. November 2009, 23:57

The 12 o'clock time signal? I remember it fondly. Haven't found the equivalent here.

hungryghost 6. November 2009, 00:49

no? I'd have thought most broadcasters would have one!

Mick-E 6. November 2009, 01:01

I think it's treated as a public service so only the public broadcasters (like CBC) do it, not commercial stations. I should try RTÉ but I'm just not a fan.

hungryghost 6. November 2009, 01:52

hmmm...maybe you can stream CBC online...then do the time difference thing...

Or skip the middleman and sync your computer clock directly to the NRC.
The NTP server is time.nrc.ca

Patricia Kass! Also Dalidah if I'm not mistaken!

hungryghost 7. November 2009, 06:58

that's a good idea, but I rather like my computer being a little bit fast so I can be onery when people show up on time, but late by my computer...

Liu 7. November 2009, 09:25

Oh, nonnnn, l'auteur est Léo Ferré. Les autres tentatives ne sont que des reprises. Do you understand me ?

hungryghost 7. November 2009, 20:19

yes - I knew they were remakes, but didn't realise it was a Leo Ferre poem or song..

Liu 7. November 2009, 20:56
