A Visit to the Church (Day 14)

, , , ...

Dear Notepad,

Today is sunday and the group decided to go to a local church. Actually, we went to Assemblies of God Church. In Pong-tamale, half of the population is made up of Muslims. But they have a great amount of christians. Churches include, Pentecost, Presbyterian Church, and other charismatic churches.

With one accord, we went to the Assemblies of God Church. Don't have much to say, all I can say is I enjoy todays service.

DAY 6 (Weekend) - A Visit to the Fulanis near the Community.

, , , ...

Dear Notepad,
This is the first weekend in the TTFPP. And today, I and a section of the boys paid the Fulanis people visit.

The fulanis people are cattle rearing people living near the community where i'm having my TTFPP. So today, in order to get the cheapest Milk, we had to in there.

The time they milk the cattle is around 9am. And it takes about 20 to 50mins to finish about 5 cattles.

One litter of milk cost just 80 ghana pesewas, less than one ghana Cedi. In the city, it would have cost a whooping 10 ghana cedi. I think one of the benefits of the Third Trimester Field Practical Program is the cheapness of foodstuffs.
I entreat every UDS student to enjoy life in his or her community.

Day 3 - Community Entry II, TTFPP.

, , , ...

At around 4:30, I was awake. The task for the day was to continue the community entry process by visiting schools in the community. But we decided to pass by the assemblyman's residence, since we are having water problems. The group got ready and exactly 7:00am we were at the Assemblyman's house. Unfortunately for us, if wasn't around.

Since we weren't able to pay each and every one of the opinion leaders visit the previous day, we decided to pass by the kpanalana's place i.e next to the Regent of the chief. When it was quarter to eight, we were at the kpanalana's house. Fuseni Issaka is his name. We made known to him who we are and what we are doing in his town. He received us warmly and wished us well in our stay.

Next stop was the Wulana's house. The Wulana is next to the Chief. He rules the community when the Chief is not in town. He is in the person of Dahama Mumuni. As usual, we introduced ourselves and our intention made known to him. If then told us that he has heard everything and in case we need anything, we can come to him.

Tunfolani's residence was next stop. The Tunfolani is Alhassan Salifu. The time was 8:30am.

At 8:45am, we were at Rashadiya Islamic School. One of the primary schools in Pong-tamale. The headmaster is Issah Hamdawei. The school has one KVIP and one Urinal. It can also coast of one mini poly-tank. But the poly-tank is not flowing with water. I think the main problem in Pong-tamale is water.

We then crossed the main Tamale-Navrongo road to the other part of the town to greet one Akaburi David Agana. David is not a Chief but the town folks respect him. He is a Civil Servant. To welcome us, if offered us Pito. Pito is a locally brewed alcoholic drink. The time was 9:05. We spent 35mins at David's residence.

When it was 9:55am, we have reached Shinlana Yakubu Alhassan's residence. Shinlana Yakubu is the caretaker of Pong in the community. Pong-tamale is made up of two villages; Pong and Tamale.

By 10:05am, we have finished with the elders and ragged the following schools visit:

Pong-tamale D/A Primary School.
Pong-tamale L/A Primary School.
Pong-tamale Senior High School.

By 11:50, we were back at the Quarters where we are lodging.

TTFPP Day 1 - Community Entry.

, , , ...

Dear Notepad,

The first phase of th TTFPP was carried out today. I woke ur around 6:00 and got my morning devotion done. By 7:40, I was done. Greeted the others group members and we set off to meet the heads of the community. We are living in am Animal Station at Pong-Tamale. This Station is far away fromness the community, about 1452 steps from the quarters where we are staying.
Our first point of stop was the Assemblyman's house. But he wasn't around. The Assemblyman, a Teacher has gone to school. But luckily he has asked a young guy to show us around. This guy led us to the Chief's Palace. The name of the chief is Muhammed Mahama. Mundashiru, a group mate introduce us to him, what our mission and how we are going to interact with the community members. The chief asked us a couple of questions like where we are from individually.

Our next stop was the Chief Priest's house. If is called Yakubu Sumaila. When entering, the males went in before the females and all were told to remove our shoes. Mundashiru, once again helped us in translating. Pong-tamale community speaks Dagbani. After the Chief Priest's, we made a stop to the Commander in Chief's (Kamona). He is called Alhassan Suleman. The naming system over here is such that, the father gives the child his name plus the child's name. Mundashiru once again introduced us to the Kamona. Mundashiru is being mentioned all the time because if understands the language. He's from Tamale campus and reading Medical Science.

We them went to the Chief Imam's place. Some nice looking building. Introduction was made and reason for our visit was put barn.

Basically, the task for today was to introduce ourselves to the community, make our presence felt and tell them what we are coming to do in their community.

It was left for us to visit the Pastor of the community. So we decided to go to the Pastor's place. Before moving, we got a message that, there are two Germans who are among our group. Florein and Markus. Florein is in group 43(my group) and Markus is in group 42. We introduced ourselves to the Pastor and came back to the quarters. Introduction was made between us and the Germans.

Today was such a productive day. Except that the ladies were complaining of tiredness. Apart fromness that, everything moved on smoothly with everyone co-operating.
