Adventures in the land of Sushi, Samurai and Subarus!!

So much to tell

So spring had sprung in my last blog entry and A-LOT has happened since then.
I’ll start with the practicum experience. June 4th 2007 I began a 4 week practicum at a little school called Zao- Hirasawa Primary School, about a 1hr drive from my residence in Sendai. I was based primarily with G5 but on occasion moved to other grades to teach them different subjects. I’ve already finished the 30 odd page report so I’ll spare you the details, but it was certainly an eye opener to the teaching in Japan.
I call it an interesting experience, not an educational one and have taken fond memories of the children and good times.
I did a lot while there with Grade 5 including- Camp, Tea ceremonies, Traditional grass cutting days, and many other things, but I’ll save them for when I see you all next.
While doing Prac I had a chance to attend 'Dralion' Cirque du Soleil's latest asian production, the Ticket was a bit exy about 100AUD but it was worth every penny a truly amazing show- if ever given the opportunity to see please do.

Next- Hong Kong
At the start of last week a Canadian friend of mine and I took off to Hong Kong for a week- and that was pure awesomeness, we exited the Hong Kong Airport into a scorching 38° (quite a change from the normal 20’s in Japan) and swam to the bus stop in near 80% humidity. Yerghk
We spent about 4 days there in total in a hotel we were promised was a Deluxe Twin or something, let me just say if we were staying in the ‘deluxe’ I would not want to see the Economy but we paid about $15AUD a night, we had A/C and after an action packed day buying fake brand-name T-shirts and Rolexes we didn’t need much persuasion to fall asleep.
I ate about the best Indian I have ever had in my life- surprisingly there are very many Indian people in Hong Kong (and they were all trying to sell either suits or curry)
The last night we stayed with some mates from Oz Lyle and Carol-ann Ferguson which was brilliant because we got the opportunity to see the slightly out of town ‘local life’ and took pleasure in sampling the fine Hong Kong Cuisine like Chickens Feet and Goose intestines.
Mmm I know your mouths are watering.

We returned to a dull grey and overcast Japan and wanted little more than recuperation.

Spring Sprang

Hey Guys, been a long time again hey? Not too much has happened, but I can't pass this season without writing about it...
Spring! as I'm sure most of you know Australia doesn't clearly define seasons, for 5 months a year its bloody hot, another 5 is mildy chilly, the other 2 are just fill ins.
Where as Japan clearly defines Autumn with vivid Reds Oranges and Yellows, Winter with a complete cold white wash, and Spring with bursting amazing Greens Bright Reds and Yellows from waving Tulips sprinkled with the falling petals of pink Cherry Blossoms- Never seen anything like it.
Waiting for summer and getting the feeling that I wont like it. From what I hear its mostly rain anyway :frown:

So- Hey I drank Absinthe the other day :insane: Strong strong stuff, This has to be one of the most notorious alcohols and the 'Real' stuff (Thujone content) has been banned in most countries for near a Century. Illegal to import or send into Australia without Special License. This stuff is reported to induce hallucinations, and its not much wonder at 70% and $10 a shot.
Click on the above link You'll learn things

Its my birthday soon- Im having a party- Your all invited, I'll have Absinthe
Im Hungry, I'll write again soon.
Love you all.

For me

Im Making this tonight... I needed to save it somewhwhere so I dropped it on my blog- if your feeling adventurous. Enjoy! p:

New news?

Mostly more of the same- skiing bout 3 times a week, which has been great- until last week, had a nasty fall attempting a jump, it may be a broken rib- still hurts, but I hope it fixes up soon enough so I can get out again before all this snow melts.
Yesterday I climbed the inside of a big 100M tall white woman, this is the second large white woman
I have climbed, the first, holding a great big fish was with Graham, I have no idea what she was the Goddess of- Fish or something.
This one I climbed with a mate Rebeca and as far we could tell from the translation shes the Goddess of Miscarriage.
Not as cool as Fish.:worried:

Inside the base of this Goddess were many small statues of Goddesses and these really scary and Evil looking beasts/men- each individual and unique, each carrying a different weapon. This particular beast for example standing around 2m high, and carved entirely of one solid piece of wood- there were perhaps 30 of these. I was rather in awe over the beautiful and intricate carving.

So, now just preparing/waiting for uni again after this 2 month break...

Long Time no Post

Its been a while, suppose I ought put one of these posts up.
So much to tell... The last month and a half or so I have been on holidays- but keeping busy.

I guess I must first tell you about the Oyster festival (松島のかき祭り)
This is one weekend of solid Oyster eating. We spent a day and sat 9 people around a fire pit roasting and swallowing Oysters all day. All in all a good day.
Don't you reckon that photo looks professional?
<-- I took it- that was my oyster.

Next- Skiing, while here I have had several opportunities to go Skiing.
The first day I went was terrible, and I was quite ready to give up, the second day I was convinced to get on the Slopes and I found out that once you get reasonably good at staying on your feet it becomes much more enjoyable.
So- I bought my own skis and shoes (because its too difficult to find my size at a rental shop) and I have been hitting the slopes almost every weekend. I have another 3 day ski trip next week. I have to hurry up and get my worth out of this season. It ends in 2 weeks.:frown:

The only other BIG news is that I went to see Stevie Wonder!!
Which was truly Awesome. He is a great entertainer- and even the old Stevie Wonder Classics he played up for the crowd to make each one sound amazing and new.

I gotta go now- I'll try not to leave it so long between posts next time.

And so it snows...

It snowed last week, only one day, thats enough...
Aussies aren't really made to drive on snow.
Hot cars and dusty roads and a driving tan- sure
Snow is like our Kryptonite. Unless your one of those Southerners.

Anyway, time to catch you up on a few more events, in December (My winter vacation) My girlfriend Ai came and visited me for a month which was great.
We spent most of our time in Sendai, but had a fun time making pudding, bowling, eating Sushi, and spending time in Hospitals- because Ai came down with a heavy fever.
Ai and I have more or less Swapped, Ai is back in Australia living in and taking care of my house, making good use of my parents (I think she talks to them more regularly than I do).
And I am here in Sendai- making good use of her parents.

Allow me to introduce you all to Dr. Graham Murphy, a Canadian resident at my college (post doc. studying Chemistry) who has become a good mate.
His work load is hectic and very Japanese- often finishing around 11pm- but we regularly meet for a Nightcap and a Gasbag.
Just recently we tripped up the Coast 200Km or so (a 2hour trip in Australia, a 2 day trip in Japan- but thats another story.)
And hit an Oyster festival just this weekend passed.
All these stories and more to come...

I am having a bit of a hectic time with Study at the moment. (Theres 2 words that rarely go to gether study and Jake)
It should be all out of the way by Friday...
我慢しています!

The Second (original title)

So the scooter is going great- I like it... at least I liked it until winter hit and fingers toes and nose go numb from the cold. Snow fogs up the Visor and wets all your clothes, and makes the road incredibly slippery for a 90Kg rider on an 80Kg bike...

So I decided to buy a car- it was a toss up between something small and practicle or something excessive and wasteful. I reckon I'll save the small and practicle for my retirement years.
I bought a Subaru WRX... The "sports" edition of the impreza housing a 2000cc Twin Turbo Boxer engine powering the AWD. I have never before driven a car so powerful.
It handles city driving quite nicely and has a reasonable 1K idle, but for the times you want to get crazy- just push your foot down an extra inch- you hear a whiz, the tacho flicks up to 7K and quickly turns your 'trot' into a 'gallop'

(or so I hear- its not like I'd try anything as silly or dangerous as that Mum.)

Oh and I uploaded those pics of my room.
I'm standing in the middle of the room where the wardrobes are- and took a photo to the right and left.
Japan has these great places called 100円 shops- like a discount place where everything costs $1, I can go on an absolute shopping spree and it all costs me $20.
You can buy Kitchen goods, non-perishable food items, bags, cleaning products, bath room stationery, even Battery chargers! Most of my room is made up of 100Yen pieces.

The first post

Hey guys,
Seeing as I am so slack at keeping contact, thought I ought finally start some kind of information page for anyone interested enough to catch up on my happenings.

Hmm I'll give you a quick run down on the 'so far'.
Landed in Japan on October 2nd for a 9month scholarship from the Japanese Government.
As things turn out I am in Sendai again (same place I stayed last time for 2 or so months) which is great because I already had Ai's Family here to help me.
I settled in to a small little apartment thing where I have a sink, fridge, stove, bed desk and like 5 wardrobes... Who on earth needs 5 wardrobes?? Certainly no temporary student resident.
(I'll see if I can throw some photos in here some time.)

I started classes at Sendai's Education University- which is OK, but I quickly grew tired of the 1.5hr return walk each day, so I bought a Scooter, A little orange 50cc Honda.
Its a Powerhouse!! a whole 4.9hp Honda 4 Stroke Engine, and economic! about $5 of fuel every 2 weeks.

Settling in to this place hasnt been too bad, of course I left my home comforts (and my dog:( ) but I've made a few decent friends here.
Some of the first people I met here were 4 Italians.
A wierd (noisy) group of people who quickly became great friends, and we have shared many great times.

So with Partying (as much as possible) and Studying (as little as possible) the time has passed quite quickly.
I share my study time with Tohoku University and Miyagi Education University, with Wednesdays spare usually spent at a local primary(小) school teaching about Australian stuff.
Teaching the little Japanese kids is Ok, they ask a whole bunch wierd questions like:
What is my favourite beetle?-
I said "Are you serious?, who on earth has a favourite beetle?"
and 98% of the class raised their hands- That taught me.. I better hurry up and find myself a favourite beetle.

But I lie to them all the time- I told them I have a pet Crocodile.
The class gave a me a Christmas card last year... they had drawn a picture of me taking my Crocodile for a walk.

This concludes the first post.
