Peoples....Hmmm is there any such word?I don't think so..Then why do people use it????Read On!!!

Hi,
i have heard many people using the word "peoples"..while conversing...is there any such word...People is a plural term representing many..still many people have this confusion(perhaps may be they are not confused may be we are)...i don;t know whether they are confused or not..but y the hell they use "peoples" while conversing...clearly shows they have'nt learnt singulars and plurals properly...and when ppl like us advise them "its not peoples its people" they are mot ready to accept it..

One more incident that i recollect now is the one which my dad shared with me..How do u pronounce the word "google" its simple it is pronounced as "gugle" ...One of the colleagues of my dad used to pronounce it as "gugley" (may be he got confused with googly(cricket)...nevertheless it sounds much like "PARLE" bigsmile When my dad tried to correct him...he said gugley is the correct pronunciation ..Dunno how these ppl manage during official meetings...Change is always good...And those who are reluctant to change can never improve...

In this post i am not trying to offend anyone because even i have pronounced few such words which were corrected by my family members and friends...happy take care catch u all in the next post..

I've noticed more and more now that people from different countries to those English speaking ones, get people and peoples confused (obviously this is a general and sweeping statement as I have never met any English [as their primary language] speaking people who get this wrong). Just my opinion for all its worth. :)

Winger writes: A few corrections...your phonetic spelling for "Google" is incorrect. The letter "U" gives an "uh" sound (as in "under") not an "ooh" sound. Google should be "goo-gul" if you need to pronounce it for people... Your spelling of "its" should be "it's" because you're actually saying "it is". The word "peoples" applies in certain circumstances, but it's almost always used incorrectly as you mentioned. If we were to talk about the people of China and the people of Japan, we could say the peoples of Asia. This denotes that we are talking about multiple groups, not a single group. For instance: 1. "The people of Asia live in a warm climate". This means that Asia as a whole has a warm climate. (not specifically true but just using it as an example) 2. "The peoples of Asia have opposing religious beliefs". This means that religious beliefs differ from country to country in Asia. (again, not specifically true) Hope that clarifies it for you!
