Perth, founded 1829 was the first major settlement by Europeans in the western part of Australia. The settler ship was the Parmelia, captained by James Stirling, and it arrived at the beginning of June in that year. The city was named Perth at the behest of British Colonial Secretary, Sir George Murray, who was a native of Perth in Scotland, and Perthshire's MP in the British House of Commons. In 1856 Perth became a city, by order of Queen Victoria.

Many of the tourist attractions in Perth focus on the Swan River, which flows through the city centre. There are many river cruise boats operating on the river, some of which offer music and dining. It can also be enjoyable just to explore the banks of the river on foot or by bicycle. Many signposted walking and cycling tracks are provided. There are also relaxing picnic spots and many scenic viewpoints of the city and river in Perth's Kings Park and Botanic Gardens.

There are lots of good shopping precincts in Perth, the best ones are supposed to be in Raine Square, Barrack Street, Forest Chase and Kings Street, or the shopping malls at Hay and Murray Streets. Souvenirs such as Aboriginal Arts and Crafts can be a good gift to buy for friends at home, but of course there are also hi-tech items such as cameras.

The Perth Zoo, and the Old Mill, are reachable by ferry from the centre of Perth, and the town as a whole has good public transport links.

The Duxton Hotel with five stars, and the Crowne Plaza Hotel (4.5 stars) are both located in the centre of Perth, beside the Swan River. The Duxton is on St. Georges' Terrace, one of the main streets in the central area, and is just next to the Perth Concert Hall, in addition to overlooking the Swan River. From the Duxton it is a short walk of just a few minutes to some of the busiest areas of Perth for nightlife, restaurants and shopping. The riverside location is also good for starting to explore the many riverside walks and city centre parklands.

There are about three hundred rooms in the Duxton, many have views over the river. All rooms have ensuite bathrooms, cable TV with movie-on-demand service, air conditioning and mini-bar. The Duxton's residents have use of amenities such as a steam room and sauna, and fully equipped gym.
