Evolving Design

One of the most challenging parts of graphic design for myself, as well as many other designers I've talked to over the years, it a continual desire to improve and change upon designs. This can be such a challenge, particularly when you are the one responsible for creating the organizational templates and design rules! As we head into fall, I find myself struggling with the templates I set forth at the beginning of the year. I have an overwhelming urge to move to a more minimalist design style and yearn to update our organizational colors. Obviously, I cannot simply follow my creative desires, particularly in light of the fact that I'm chest deep in re-establishing our brand. Or can I?
There are methods to maintain the progress one has made in developing a brand while evolving one's style.
1) Maintain your colors and start making subtle shifts in layout
2) Maintain your layout and colors and update your photos and graphics
3) Maintain your layout and change your colors
4) Maintain your colors layout, photos and graphics and update your logo
5) Go crazy and change everything at once and make a big noise about it
My preferred approach at the moment is #1. I am working on a new layout for 2007. People seem to expect new and fresh things at the start of a new year, so this is a good strategy for us. Since making these changes across numerous print and electronic pieces take time, if you too are in the mood for change, now is the time to get started.
