If you exercise with a high frequency, it can be very hard to distinguish between a small injury and a serious injury. To further complicate matters, the wrong management approach can turn a small injury into a serious one.
So here is how to prevent a lurking injury from shutting down your fitness goals:
1. Immobilize yourself: If you hurt yourself while working out, stop exercising. Pushing through the pain can leave you with a very devastating injury. You see, keep in mind that excess adrenalin when you are exercising will blunt your pain response. Thus, a serious injury may feel like a mere pinch.
2. Ice it: I know this sounds like I'm beating a dead horse, but the truth is that coldness can prevent a moderate injury from progressing into something nasty. You see, tendons and ligaments have a very poor blood supply. And swelling further reduces the supply of blood.
3. Get hot: Hot temperatures are great for getting the injured tissue pliable and subsequently, for getting blood into the affected area. Now always apply cold first, then apply some heat. Once the swelling has gone done a lot, you can cycle between the two. Always remember that blood will speed up the healing process.
4. Elevate when all else fails: Elevation is just another way to further reduce swelling. When used in conjunction with cold temperatures, it can do a great job at really getting the swelling under control. So make sure you use elevation if you feel that the injury is not responding well to cold alone.
5. See a doctor: Do not suck it up. The last thing you want is a minor injury turning into something that requires time off or even worse, surgery. If the injury doesn't go away within days, seek medical attention immediately. It's much better to be safe than sorry here.
A large amount of exercise injuries are minor. And because they are neglected and not babied, they end up turning into much more serious conditions. Do not fall into this trap and act on the information in this article without delay!
