The Biggest Entertainment Launch Last Year Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

How the heck did I never review this game before? Although Call of Duty games in recent years have stuck to a pretty similar formula and visual style which treads on franchise fatigue, this was actually the game to start it all. This game was also the first to finally take down Halo as the most played game on Xbox Live, a feat no one thought was possible. Some consider it to be one of the best games ever made, and even with two sequels, I’d have to agree. This is Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for the Xbox 360.Call of Duty 4 is set in the very near future, following the character Soap Mactavish forth majority of the story. Captain John Price is also introduced here, although another Captain Price was actually in the first two games. As members of the Special Air Service, Soap and Price are attempting to stop Al-Assad, a terrorist who is believed to have nuclear weapons. They’re joined in their efforts by the United States Marine Corps, and Sgt.Jackson, who you also play as for a portion of the game.

The pacing of Call of Duty 4is still the best out of any of the game in the series. The conflict starts out fairly isolated, and as things quickly take a turn for the worst, the game enters a flashback segment containing “All Ghillied Up”, which is still my favorite level in the entire series. The combination of awesome set-pieces and suspense is what the series is known for, and that started with this game. If you’ve played any of the recent games in the Call of Duty series, you know what to expect from game play in Call of Duty 4.A lot of the weapons from this game are also present in newer installments, but Call of Duty 4 varies the game play just enough to always keep it exciting. Hit detection is incredible, and I have never had a single glitch in my time with the campaign. Enemies are a little bit predictable in terms of where they are in each level, but they’re still challenging enough to keep it interesting.

The levels in this game are also some of the most memorable in the whole series, such as “Charlie Don’t Surf”, a nod to Apocalypse Now, and the amazing sections in the Ukraine. Now, Call of Duty 4 is also the only gamin the Modern Warfare series that has a plot capable of standing on its own. Modern Warfare2 ends in a cliffhanger, and Modern Warfare 3 picks up right where the last game liftoff, but this one actually wraps everything up nicely. It’s almost as if Infinity Ward and Activision weren’t sure the game would be a huge success and spawn a sub-series. When it came out, Call of Duty 4 was one of the best looking games on the Xbox 360.

Nowadays, it isn’t as shocking to see, but it doesn’t look bad at all. There are actually a few issues with rendering that I encountered early on in the game, though. Voice acting and music are also extremely good, with the voice actor playing Gas actually playing Ghost in the next game. Although we’ve now seen the formula in quite few Call of Duty games, we still need to appreciate the first Modern Warfare. Thesis the game that eventually led to the biggest entertainment launch in the history of mankind last year. Show some respect.
