Icestorm9999 Post #57 Heroes of Might and Magic & other News

, , , ...

Heroes of Might and Magic I,II&III are currently being sold at Gog.com and are updated Windows XP & Vista compatible downloadable versions which are only $9.99 each. HoMMII is the gold version which includes its expansion "Heroes of Might and Magic II: The Price of Loyalty". & HoMMIII is the Complete Collectors Edition which includes ts two expansions: “Armageddon's Blade” and “The Shadow of Death”. Downloadable content of the manuals, creature tables and other goodies are included. Thank you Gog.com!!
Although the Heroes of Might and Magic games are in the strategy game genre, I have listed them on the icestorm9999 crpg directory because well...they are excellent games and I like them. Fantasy + Turn Based + Strategy = Massive fun and hours upon hours of the kind of "having so much fun that you forgot to have dinner" or "forgot to go to work" kind of thing. So definitely check it out, especially if you have never played them before, or if you have played them before and want to download them and play them all over again. The Heroes of Might and Magic games are not the only games in the strategic genre to appear on the directory however...Panzer General, The Battle for Wesnoth, and Strateg are also listed.

I was reading some posts over at Cheek.Org (the home of the Bard's Tale IV petition), which seems is in the process of relocating to a new host at troycheek.org. The petition is not yet moved onto its new location, but I found that there is an eye of the beholder/wizardry type game that is currently under development using the game maker program. The game is called "The Secret of Lamidia". I know, it kind of sounds like some evil sexually transmitted disease or something of that freaky nature, but hey its good to see people are still interested in developing games similar to the old classic crpg's. If I can take a quote from Sub (the developer)...

features: you can make a group of adventurers, explore the first dungeon area and local forests, fight monsters, maybe even get a magic item from a treasure chest, there are some quests added now, and other game content (a trading post, training hall, tavern, inn, etc, so you can maintain a group of adventurers) .. the game is being developed with more quests etc * make groups of up to 6 party members * diverse items and equipment (and being expanded) * 4 basic char classes, with advanced classes on the way * 6 char races, having different sizes (and being expanded) * fully working inventory system (and being expanded) * some magic spells, skills already developed * magic item generation is already supported future features: lots.. [suggestions welcome]

It is still a work in progress and you can find more about the game at the link below.

Another update from Leomar let me know that there is a more up to date Ultima archive & reconstruction set located at Ultima: Aiera. Thanks again Leomar!

Icestorm9999 Post #56 (Updates)

Today I received an email from Leomar informing me of a Baldur's Gate Megamod project called BiG World Project.
BiG World Project
A quote from his forum post concerning the project = "The BiG World Project aims to merge all games of the Baldur's Gate series and the additional contents created by its community in one massive adventure, including a modification of BG1 to run BG1 with the more modern engine of BG2, plus the added functionality of ToB expansion."

Leomoar also indicated a link to a game called Minimae for the iphone, or the ipod touch, and can be purchased for $2.99 at the Itunes store. I do not own an iphone or have iTunes installed, so I have not played it but it looks like a fun old-school style game.
Minimae

OK. That's all for now.

Thanks Leomar!

Icestorm9999 Post #55 (updates & geocities duplicated sites)

The Alternate Reality Remake Project

Dark Sun Online . org
We originally had a previous listing of Dark Sun: Age of Heroes which was located at dso.zidev(dot)com, however due to a virus that infected the Dark Sun site, we decided not to link to it and rather link to Dark Sun online until the Dark Sun Age of Heroes site either fixed the infection or moved to another non-infected site.

Elemental: War of Magic

The below 2 CRPG's are listed due to their classic style game format, however if you do not enjoy Anime style images, please look away. If Anime does not bother you, then please enjoy this wonderful series of crpg's.
Etrian Odyssey
Etrian Odyssey 2

Now here is a classic that all should be able to enjoy with no worries about Anime.
Eye of the Beholder II

Here is not quite an RPG, however this Strategic game is much qualified to be enlisted in the directory.
Styrateg

In addition to Styrateg, "Undercroft", an rpg for the Ipod, or Pocket PC can obtained at...

That's it for now. Happy Adventuring!!

Icestorm9999 Blog Post #54 Geocities sites duplication / Might and Magic re-release / Site updates

By now you know that Yahoo is closing all Geocities sites next month on October 26th. With the help of Sokolkeep from the icestorm9999 forums we have been slowly duplicating some Geocities site material to save it from when Yahoo pulls the plug. Here is what we have saved so far...

There is/soon to be was, awesome Pool of Radiance Homage page first constructed by Ben Quinton.
http://www.geocities.com/ben.quinton/Games/Pool/index.html
Attempts to contact him have been unsuccessful thus far so in preparation I have duplicated his Pool of Radiance Homage. The mirror site is at the link below, and is a MUST see for any Pool of Radiance fan. We are not talking about the crummy Remake/Sequel Ruins of Myth Drannor, this is the real deal ORIGINAL Pool of Radiance 1988 version.
Pool of Radiance Homage Mirror

In a previous post I mentioned that Andrew Schultz's Pool of Radiance Codewheel Javascript page has also been duplicated. Similarly attempts to contact him have also been unsuccessful.
Pool of Radiance Codewheel Javascript Mirror

We have though been successful in contacting Keir who had some great Bard's Tale info on his Geocities site. Duplication of his site has been permitted and is mostly complete at the link below.
Keir's Bard's Tale Site Mirror

I am in the process of duplicating some Wizard's Crown and Eternal Dagger pages also. Hope to have that ready soon.

In other news there is a new Re-release of Might and Magic 1-6 & Swords of Xeen on GOG.com This re-release is updated so to be compatible with Windows XP & Windows Vista (32 & 64 bit), so you won't be needing a DOS emulator. The games are being sold for only $9.99, a real bargain. If you are a Might and Magic Fan you should check this out. It is limited edition so it won't be around for ever. I might just end up picking this up for myself too.
Might and Magic 1-6 + Swords of Xeen Re-released!!

Also worth noting that the same can be said for Realms of Arkania 1+2 which are also for sale now at GOG.com There is a "coming soon" notice on Realms of Arkania 3 so if you like the Arkania series check it out.
Realms of Arkania 1+2 Re-released!!

Someone had mentioned on the guestbook that they would like to see Alternate Reality: the City, and Alternate Reality: The Dungeon listed on the icestorm9999 rpg directory so I surfed the net for a while to try and locate some decent AR sites and found a few of them, the best being...
Alternate Reality on the Web, which contains both game downloads and lots of awesome AR info, maps, files artwork, etc. So have a looksie and it now has a place on the directory. :o:)

There has been some recent activity with the "Bard's Tale Builder" an (open source implementation of the Bard's Tale Construction Set). If you are a Bard's Tale fan and good at programming you might want to have a visit over at the Adventurer's Guild Forums where Dulsi has posted about his work on Bard's Tale Builder, and also of course check out the main Bard's Tale Builder Homepage

There is a game-in-development that is very similar to Might and Magic I & II, called Realms of Quest III It is for the VIC20 system so get your emulator ready. The game should be released very soon. ;o)

Well I guess that's it for today. Until next time...

Icestorm9999 RPG Directory Blog Post #53

Well yesterday I received by mail a Factory Sealed "Buck Rogers: Matrix Cubed" 5+1/4 IBM PC Version game, and I quickly scanned the front and back of the box via scanner so you can all view.
http://www.icestorm9999.com/br2/matrix_cubed_box1.png
http://www.icestorm9999.com/br2/matrix_cubed_box2.png
The description on Amazon claimed it was a 3.5" Disk. Then when I purchased it, I received an email confirmation that what shipped was a 3.5" Disk CD-ROM video game. Huh? Something seems wrong here. & when delivered I find that what was actually shipped was a 5+1/4 Disk version of the game. Luckily I didn't purchase the game to open it up and actually play it since I already have a working version to do that with. I'm a collector and I do not intend on opening the factory sealed (ORIGINAL VERSION!) of the Matrix Cubed! Anyways, although I was expecting the said 3.5, I am content with the 5+1/4 version which I received, especially since it is in mint condition/no scratches, crushes, bends, warps, blemishes or anything else to be seen. They kept the game&box in excellent condition. I am happy.

Icestorm9999 Blog Post #52 A Donation! and Updates...

I was suprised the other day by an email I received from Paypal indicating that the Icestorm9999 rpg directory received a donation! This is actually the very first donation that the site has ever received, and a very generous one at that. Charles T. has made a donation of $30. and had this to say about the site. "Great site. Its good to see someone keeping the old games alive." Thanks Charles! It is much appreciated, and I am glad that you like the site!

Now on to the updates...On August 31st, "Knights of the Chalice" version 1.15 has recently been released and the demo is and full game are now both available. Knights of the Chalice is an old-school style crpg which is similar to the gold-box series and the also has similarities the Ultima series. It is turn-based! I played a bit of the demo last weekend, and it is definitely fun. Worth checking out.
Knights of the Chalice

Another addition to the directory is a fansite for the old Amiga rpg "Fate: Gates of Dawn". I actually have never played it, but from the fansite it looks like a thorough and detailed rpg. + its for the Amiga, + its from the makers of "Legend of Faerghail", (Re-Line).
Fate: Gates of Dawn (fansite)

& Finally, "Wayfarer". A 3D game with C-64/Atari like graphics. Don't let the old style graphics fool you though. The combination of old graphics with a 3D world looks amazing! Its something that you just have to see for yourself.
Wayfarer

Tron Legacy (Tron 2)

Tron Legacy (Tron 2)

I've been waiting for ever for a sequel to Tron. Now it seems we will finally be able to have one. Jeff Bridges returns as Flynn, Bruce Boxleitner will possibly return as Alan, and now we can only hope for Cindy Morgan to come back as Lora/Yori. Only time will tell. The graphics look great, and you know that they'll be making a video game based on the new movie. They have to. An updated speederbike and disc game would be amazing. That plus the tanks shooting down those flying magnetic ships? That'd be great! I can't wait.

Pool of Radiance Codewheel Javascript Page

There was this amazing Pool of Radiance Codewheel Javascript in which users could plug into the Espruar and Dethek alphabet characters and translate it into English. It is currently on a Geocities site hosted by Andrew Schultz, and in case anyone hasn't heard yet, Geocities is set to terminate on October 26, 2009. Since I have tried via email to contact Andrew unsuccessfully, I have no idea whether he has plans to transfer the PoR codewheel onto another site to avoid the Geocities closure I have taken the liberty of copying the codewheel onto my site just in case. If Andrew reads this just respond here. I am just duplicating this because I do not want this to be gone forever. It has a great place here in the internet world. So without further ado, I am pleased to present to you the Pool of Radiance Javascript Codewheel...

Oh and also the blog now has anonymous posting capabilities so you do not need to register here. Anything you want to say just say it. & Thanks to Roland for my first anonymous post!

Geocities is closing: A part of Web History Destroyed

, , , ...

I got the news recently that Yahoo has decided to scrap its free web-hosting service "Geocities". As of April 23rd 2009, Geocities is no longer accepting new registrations and on October 26th 2009, all Geocities sites will be removed. Any files, media, pictures, text on all Geocities sites will be permanently deleted from Yahoo's servers, so if you have any Geocities sites out there you better get your data transferred elsewhere before October 26th. Sure Geocities has had its share of questionable or downright bad decisions over the years including crippling the data transfer limit among other things but I'm not going to get into that. Many of us remember Geocities as a place where we created our first website and learned the basics of HTML via trial and error. Our first niche in the enormous world wide web. There are certainly many, many sites contained on Geocities and as of October 26th, they are all going to bite the dust. I know there are allot of abandoned Geocities sites out there. Pages that haven't been updated in 2, 5, 10 or more years but regardless of when they've been last updated, there are some sites that have some really great information so I suggest that perhaps some patrolling around the old Geocities sites and have a look to see what you can find there (before its gone). I had two Geocities sites. (www.geocities.com/dofner1999) & (www.geocities.com/sokolkeep), both of which are de-activated now. All of their data was converted onto the icestorm9999.

Here is a copy of the official email communication from Yahoo Geocities to its customers...
