賛成と、とりあえずコメント。考えつく不具合は？

一応は賛成に入れるんですけど、
やっぱりOperaの初期設定と違うっていうのが気になります。
お初の人はOperaでアクセスする可能性も高いですし。

最新版の初期設定をutf-8に変更してもらうことができたとしても、（その直前までの）現行バージョンの人は設定変更しないといけないですから。

そう、Operaの初期設定がネックなんです。
Operaのエンコーディング設定を変えるってのは結構敷居が高いですし。。

UTF-8 is the best choice.

皆さんがその方がいいならそれでもいいですが、そもそもこのチャンネルは日本人のためのチャンネルですし、日本人でUTF-8に設定してこのチャンネルに来て困った例はどれくらいあるのでしょう？

初心者はOperaのクライアントでくるよね、という事でこの提案は却下で！

これから先、やっぱりUTF-8の方がいいよ☆っていうことになったら、またその時考えましょう

I cannot read Japanese, but in my opinion the world would be a better place if all IRC users used UTF-8.

In Japan, almost people use ISO-2022-JP that is one of a local charset in IRC.
So, Opera's IRC client also use ISO-2022-JP as default.
(Maybe because ISO-2022-JP is 7bit-safe)

Of cause, irc.opera.com is international.
UTF-8 should be used in the room for all of irc.opera.com's member.
But in #japanese's case, Japanese Opera beginner is more important than others that use UTF-8.
Because #japanese is mainly for Japanese talker.

So, we'll talk about it when almost Japanese IRC client use UTF-8 as default.
I believe that it well become in the not-so-distant future

Unfortunately, I don't think so, Kuruma. I've been using its IRC for 3 years and they didn't change the default encoding to UTF-8.
