Irion Fam

Katie, Ricky, Grace, and Duncan

Last Post

Hello all you people out there who still occasionally check this blog. I am still alive, just lazy. However, in an attempt to turn over a new leaf I am switching blogs. With the possibility of going private on the immediate horizon, I thought I'd switch to a blogging domain where most people already have an account. So, farewell My Opera. You have treated us well but are obviously not the popular choice. It was good while it lasted.
If you still want to know all the Irion family antics please go to: http://irionfamilytaketwo.blogspot.com/
Hope to see you in cyberspace!

Happy Halloween

You gotta love Halloween. I've always thought Halloween was the bomb but since I've had kids I think it is even cooler. It is just too much fun looking through costumes and finding some for your kids. It is even better this year because Grace is in love with her costume and might be wearing it for a couple more days. Don't be surprised if you see her in it at Stake Conference this weekend. Frankly, it is not a battle I care about winning.
Duncan, on the other hand, can't wait to get out of his getup. It makes me sad it makes him so hot because he looks adorable in it. It was such a hit with the ladies yesterday that he won a costume contest at the med school. How could you not award this little face though???

So long good friend

Okay, some of you may think I'm dumb to dedicate an entire post to a doll. This isn't any doll though; this is Samantha, one of the American Girl's dolls. I know all of you out there know what dolls I'm talking about. When I was growing up these dolls were everything to me. All the dolls are cute but who's kidding who, we all know Samantha is the best one. She has money, the best dresses, mini ice skates for crying out loud. I begged my parents for Samantha and was ecstatic when I got her. For years afterward my birthday and Christmas list would revolve around new Samantha clothes and accessories. I was so hard core that my grandma even made me a dress to match Samantha's. And this was before anyone did that. My grandma made me Samantha's Christmas dress. All red with a white collar. So cute. My Grandma also made special dresses for Samantha that you couldn't buy from the catalog. I thought I was the cat's meow. I loved it all, and in fact, at one point, had all but one of Samantha's accessories and clothes. Yup, I never got Samantha's trunk. I asked for it for years and never got it. I thought my parents were mean but I guess they were just realistic considering the trunk cost $175.00 and it was only made to hold things. I can forgive them now but growing up I was so sad not to own it all. Every last bit of all Samantha goodness.
Anyway, the idiotic people at the American Girl's corporation have decided to discontinue Samantha. I am seriously sad. I am sad because she was a huge part of my childhood, and I’m sad to see her go. I am sad because there are other way less cool dolls (i.e. Molly and Josephina) that should be discontinued before Samantha should. I’m sad because having her be discontinued makes me feel old, and I am really sad because Grace will never get the chance to pick Samantha as her American Girl doll. That really bums me out. I am glad the Samantha books will still be available so she can still enjoy her that way but I sure wish she could also own her if she wanted to. I will have to channel all my positive thoughts on her picking Kit because she is my next favorite. Ricky told me it is not such a big deal since I own practically everything of Samantha’s I can just give it all to Grace. Hmm, I really don’t know if I could. Maybe once Grace grows up and won’t cut her hair off.
Good-bye Samantha. You will be missed.

Gotta love the fall

Seriously, I love the fall. I love the fall for the crisp feeling in the air, for the leaves changing colors, for the start of sweater and coat wearing season (Yahoo!), and for those rare days where it is so warm you can't help but be outside and enjoy yourself. We had one of those rare days this past weekend. It was so beautiful. You couldn't stay inside without feeling bad about wasting the weather. We took full advantage of it by going with our friend's the Leavitts, packing up the kiddos and heading up to a farm 30 minutes north of our house. We had a great time letting Grace pet and feed the animals, play in a mini-maze, jump into a big pile of hay, going on a tractor ride to a pumpkin patch, bowling with pumpkins, and swinging on swings. I'm not one to get too sappy on a public blog but I will say that it was a day I hope not to forget. Grace was so happy and the weather was so perfect and Duncan and Ricky were so cute, it was just great. Okay, it was great until Grace practically stuck her whole hand in a goat's mouth and got bit. She still has the little bite mark to prove it. Don't worry though, on the way home we asked her if she wanted us to stop by McDonalds and get her some chicken nuggets. Her response: "Yes, chicken nuggets help my finger feel better." Such little things to make her happy. My other favorite comment from her came when she saw the rabbit in a cage. "Eww, rabbit poo! Wear a diaper." Enough said.

Umm...speechless.

So, Ricky and I are officially homeowners. YES! Can you believe it? We can't. I guess that this is all assuming that things go according to plan between now and closing. But still, for all intents and purposes, we're homeowners. Our jaws are still on the floor. Shocked is too tame to describe our moods. The more time we have to think about it, however, the more excited we are. It has been my favorite house for weeks but too pricey for our little price tag. I guess the sellers were desperate though because they accepted what we could offer. I am honestly still reeling. What am I going to do with all that room? I'm honestly giddy thinking about all the space, the two bathrooms, the finished basement, the fenced-in backyard, and the two car garage. No more wiping off 1,000 inches of snow. Take that Wisconsin winters!
You know what this means for all of you right? This means we have more space so now you have no excuse not to come out. You wouldn't even have to get a hotel room and we could walk to the zoo. Yeah Em, WALK to the zoo. Are you sure you don't want to move out here?
P.S. Anyone dying to help some people move in the next month???

Doughnuts: I've moved up from okay wife to great wife!

Disclaimer: Before I begin, I'd just like to say that any reference to me as an "okay wife" or "good wife" or "great wife" is merely from my estimation. Let’s be honest, Ricky better never say I'm just an "okay wife."

So, for as along as I've known Ricky, and I am sure for years before I entered the picture, Ricky's family and extended family have had an ongoing doughnut tradition. Each year, after the two Priesthood sessions of conference, Ricky's family gathers together to eat homemade doughnuts and talk about what everyone learned from the conference. All the ladies in Ricky's family gather during priesthood to eat soup together and make the doughnuts. Even though this has not always been my tradition, I really love and admire it. It is a tradition that is steeped in laughter, happiness, love, family connection, and spirituality. I think it is a rare gift to hear your brothers, dad, uncles, cousins, and grandpa talk about conference and tell you want they learned. It is a tradition I am sad to miss because we live in Wisconsin.
Anyway, it has always been one of Ricky's favorite traditions but I have never really come through for him. I mean, I've sort of come through. We've been married for six year and every year I've bought some wonderful doughnuts for Ricky. One year I even thought I was quite the wife because I went out of my way and bought Krispie Kremes. Ricky has NEVER complained but I knew the tradition wasn't the same without homemade doughnuts.
I've always shunned away from making them though because I am freaked out with hot oil. I mean, that stuff is lethal. So, yesterday afternoon I was outside with some neighbors and after I told my friends about my attempt at replicating Ricky’s tradition with my store bought doughnuts one of my friends told me doughnuts were actually easy to make and she would help me. Yes! I had a chance to move from "okay wife" to "fantastic wife." And that is definitely what happened. Last night five of my friends came over and we turned my kitchen into a doughnut making factory. I was so proud of us. We made glazed, powdered sugar, and cinnamon sugar. Plus, we made enough doughnut holes to last us until next conference. (Well, not that long because they are too tempting and way TOO easy to pop in your mouth.)

The doughnut tradition has finally made it to Wisconsin. It was a real treat to see Ricky come in to see homemade doughnuts. I know they are not exactly like home (We made some from biscuits. Way easy and really good.) but they were at least homemade. Ricky ate three in minutes so I think we succeeded!
(I have no idea why my arm looks like it is dislocated.)

Next challenge in becoming perfect wife: eggs-a-la-goldenrod. I promise, that's coming!

Disneyland Take Two-Popcorn and Churros Here I Come

When Grace walked into Disneyland on our first day there she looked at me and said, "Mommy I want to live here." How could you not love hearing that??
I really can't say it enough, going to Disneyland twice in one month is like a dream come true for me. Honestly. I know some of you out there are scoffing but I'm not joking. There is nothing like walking into Disneyland before it opens, window shopping on Main Street, getting to the front of the line, and run/walk to your first ride of the day. Granted, the experience was a little different this time because I was wheeling a double stroller through the crowds. It is kind of nice to have though because people definitely get out of your way. We made it to the Finding Nemo ride first and were on in minutes. Grace was still scared but was fine as long as we were covering her ears.

Overall we had a fabulous trip. It was just hot enough that you wanted to go on the water rides but not too hot that you scorching. There were hardly any people there and we walked on pretty much everything. We went on every ride and hit the tea cups at least six times. (That is Gracie's current favorite.)

This is Grace getting dizzy. She would move her head round and round and say, "I'm getting dizzy, I'm getting dizzy.

Other favorites:
She loved Heimlech's Chew Chew Train over in California Adventure. She could not get enough of that fat caterpillar. The ride goes at about a snail's pace and even gets you wet when he bites into the "juicy vatermelon" but she was thoroughly entertained.

She also loved the parades. Yup, I'm now a parade watcher. When we were growing up and going to Disneyland every year we would scoff at parade watchers. Everyone knows that the ride lines are at their lowest during the parades. Well, I am now one of the masses who sit on the hard cement floor and watches people dressed up as Disney character walk the street. It was all worth it to watch Grace though. She was completely enamored. This is one of my favorite pictures of her. She can't look away.

Duncan was just wide eyed the entire time. I wish you all could have seen his face during the rides. He was definitely on sensory overload, big time. His eyes were as wide as mini-saucers.

So, a fantastic trip. Duncan was a dream baby and just fell asleep in the car seat all day. We did get comments all the time about his girth. One lady in line referred to his legs as meaty. Yeah, I don't think I'm going to continue that one around here.
It was a fabulous three days and I would do it all over again tomorrow. A HUGE thanks to mom and dad for getting all of us out there. What are you doing next week???

P.S. Ricky, in an amazing feat of stunning eye skill found the block we bought for my mom on her 50th birthday. Yup, a little bit of the Hutchisons is forever shrined in Disneyland.

P.P.S. Rachel, that's right, we got the passes again! Well, I was on a kiddie ride with Gracie and Ricky but the rest of the fam got them once they were seated in the elevator on Tower of Terror. Totally random.

Ahh California, why didn't we match in your gloriously warm state!

This has been such a fantastic month. California twice in one month is my kind of month. Can we do this all the time?? We had such a terrific time. We were able to spend about a half an hour at the beach on Tuesday and Grace had the time of her life chasing seagulls and running away from the water. Andrew would run with her down to the water and she would yell, "No, no, don't go into the river." She's a character and Duncan is such a charmer. Ahh, fat little babies are the best.

Could you ever get sick of lookin' at this little pudge??

Bored?? Take some pointers from Grace and Duncan for some fun.

Okay, if you're name is either Grace or Duncan Irion these are the steps for a perfect Saturday afternoon.
1. Have a mom that is a sucker for anything Halloween and have her buy Halloween Oreos in a moment of weakness.
2. Watch mom dunk her Oreo in milk, sigh, and decide that is what you want to do with your Oreo. Proceed to eat Oreo, after Oreo, after Oreo and dunk to your heart's content. Get very messy.
3. Because you are so messy, have your mom bring you to the sink and wash your hands and arms. Find that you enjoy the water so much that you stay over and play.
4. After getting so wet, have your mom take off your clothes, get in the sink and play with every available bowl, cup, and piece of tupperware you can get your hands on.
5. Play in the sink for an HOUR AND A HALF and have the time of your life. Finally get out when your fingers and your feet are "raisen fingers" according to Grace.
6. Meanwhile, watch your brother Duncan get picked up by his Grandpa. Watch your Grandpa take Duncan outside.
7. Quicky run outside, no time for clothes, find your brother in a big bucket because Grandpa needs both of his hands to wash the car.
8. Get in another bucket and have the time of your naked life watching Grandpa and Nana wash the car.
9. Hopefully fall asleep as early as possible after having the time of your life this afternoon.

Just to show how cute this whole afternoon was here is a photo history. I can't get enough of these two.

Disney, Duncan update, and D-Day

DISNEY!

How could I pass up the chance to blog about my favorite place on earth: Disneyland! Honestly, it truly is the happiest place on earth. That phrase is more than a slogan to me. Ricky, Grace, and I were able to go to Disneyland with the whole Irion clan last week. Yup, all 22 of us walked around Disneyland and lived in Fantasyland until we thought we deserved a room there. There were nine grandkiddos and 13 adults. That is quite a crowd. I loved the look on the Disney worker's face when she asked how many in our group and we responded "22." Yup, we practically had the entire Casey Junior Train to ourselves. It was a blast.

I honestly can say that Disneyland is my all-time favorite vacation spot. Pooh, pooh to beaches and relaxing. My idea of fun to getting to Disneyland before it opens, running to Splash Mountain, walking on most rides, eating a churro while watching Fantasmic or the fireworks, staying until the park closes and then getting up and doing it all again the next day. Ahh, bliss.
Now, this trip was a little different because we brought baby Grace. (We actually only had Grace and Duncan stayed home and had a party with Grandpa Hutch and Nana Deb.)

Yup, first time with kiddos changes the pace a little. I will be honest, when we walked in the park and Gracie saw Minnie Mouse for the first time I actually teared up a bit. No joke. Ricky started laughing at me. I think Graced loved Disneyland. I say "think" because we had to cover her ears for most rides for her to enjoy herself She is a little scaredy-cat and found the loud noises a little too much. She did love Dumbo, the Teacups, and the new Toy Story ride. She also loved to ride Casey Junior and the train around Disneyland. She loved seeing the characters and even though she would never look at the camera when she needed to, she still had a great time.

Thank you so much Rich and Gloria and fam. It was a blast! Ahh, I can't wait to go again. Oh wait, I'm leaving again on Tuesday to go with the Hutchison clan. This is my kind of month.

Duncan
Just wanted to remind everyone that we do have two children. Duncan didn't make it to Disneyland but he still had a blast. He got to hang out with Nana and Grandpa and was the hit of every party. According to my dad, Duncan is the "light of his life." He and my mom just fell in love with this chunky little guy. In fact, here is a conversation I had with my dad when I got home:
Dad: "Katie, I think you're very mean."
Katie: (completely shocked) "WHY?"
Dad: "Because your mom can't have children anymore and you can so you should leave Duncan here with us and go back to Wisconsin and have more babies of your own."
Katie: ??? What???
So, Duncan is a hit with anyone he meets. I mean, who could deny this face!

Russell's D-Day
One other reason the kiddos and I came back to Utah was to see Ricky's brother Russell before he left on his mission to Hamburg, Germany. We had a great time with him in California and loved spending all our time with him. He is one amazing kid and will be an incredible missionary. We are so proud of him and so grateful for his example to our kiddos. Just a shout out of love to this wonderful missionary!
