Third Live CD test: Mandriva Linux One 2007 Spring

The third in my test drive of non-Windows operating systems here is one of the more well known distributions of Linux going back a few years, aimed at business and office users, it used to be known as Mandrake until the company bought out Conectiva. Mandriva Linux appears very professional from the website, and it's clear they are aiming at a professional desktop user market. The version I am using is the one they promote as being able to boot and go from a single CD: Mandriva One.

    Don't get winamp. Get Media Monkey! Much easier to bulk-edit ID tags, much easier to organise your music. It also rips and burns audio CDs much better than crappy windows media player, which takes forever "preparing" files. Did I mention it's free?

    Open source audio editor and multitracker.

  • LAME Aint an Mp3 Encoder

    The original MP3 encoding software website.

  • WavPack - hybrid audio compression

    High quality audio compression.

  • 7-zip - archiver

    Zip program that gives better compression than any others. Supports zip, rar, gz, tar, and others, plus its own superior 7z format. On top of that it can open and edit iso files without mounting them!

  • PDF Creator

    Create PDFs out of any document or graphic file using a virutual "PDF Printer". Very easy to use.

  • CDBurnerXP Pro - CD and DVD burning software

    Easy, quick and full-featured CD/DVD burning software. Will also burn any ISO to any disk, and create an ISO file from any compilation you make. AND... it's free.

  • IrfanView

    The smallest, fastest, easiest graphics viewing and editing program I've come across.

  • The Gimp - Gnu Image Manipulation Program

    GNU Image Manipulation Program. Open source image editor available for Linux/BSD, Windows and Mac. Even more features, some that even Photoshop doesn't have such as gif animation.

  • Nvu - web editor

    Free web page editor - does most of what Dreamweaver does plus a bit more besides, and it's free - very handy...

  • PSPad - text/code editor
