Get Opera on a stick!

Don't get winamp. Get Media Monkey! Much easier to bulk-edit ID tags, much easier to organise your music. It also rips and burns audio CDs much better than crappy windows media player, which takes forever "preparing" files. Did I mention it's free?

Zip program that gives better compression than any others. Supports zip, rar, gz, tar, and others, plus its own superior 7z format. On top of that it can open and edit iso files without mounting them!

The smallest, fastest, easiest graphics viewing and editing program I've come across.

GNU Image Manipulation Program. Open source image editor available for Linux/BSD, Windows and Mac. Even more features, some that even Photoshop doesn't have such as gif animation.

Open Source office suite. It does pretty much everything that MS Office does - except drain your wallet of funds of course.

The best Firewall software available - and it's free. Comodo also make free antivirus and anti-spyware software.

Like Trillian, but connects to you lots more instant messenger services for free: Jabber/XMPP/GoogleTalk, Bonjour, Gadu-Gadu, QQ, SILC, SIMPLE, Zephyr and more. It's also available for Linux, BSD and other platforms whereas Trillian is Windows only.
