, ,

A good interior designer will tell you that adding an area rug alongside stone, hardwood, tile or laminate flooring can really enhance a room. Area rugs not only are great for creating contrasts in texture and color in your living space but they also help cut down on damage to your original flooring, especially in high traffic areas.

Area Rug Types. There are too many types of rug material and styles that are on the market today to list. It really comes down to an individuals taste and need. A list of the most popular styles, and why they may be a good choice, of area rugs can be found below.

Sisal Area Rugs. The sisal plant can create an all-natural fiber area rug called the sisal area rug. Because it is tougher, stronger and more durable than flax, jute or even hemp, sisal is an ideal material to make area rugs and has been for thousands of years. Area rugs made of sisal material are normally greenish or light brown in color and are a woven style. Area rugs made of sisal can be dyed or bleached and often have borders that are made of leather or canvas.

The Oriental Rug. The term "oriental rug" generally refers to thick, ornate wool rugs with intricate dyed designs. Persian rugs are perhaps the most popular oriental rug style, sporting flowing, mid-eastern designs and a thick, warm feel. There are more contemporary oriental rugs out there, however. Everything from abstract dye patterns to country western motifs are available to match any home design.

Bamboo Area Rugs. Bamboo area rugs are growing in popularity because they are both environmentally friendly and they come in a variety of colors and designs. Bamboo area rugs considered "green" because bamboo can be grown on plantations and harvested every few years without killing the plant. There are an abundance of styles, including matchstick, woven fiber and slat bamboo designs. There are also numerous color, border and paint on design choices as well.

Seagrass and Mountaingrass Area Rugs. Like sisal, both seagrass and mountaingrass rugs are made by weaving fibrous plant material to create natural looking, durable woven rugs and mats. Seagrass is hard to beat when it comes to looks and price, but isn't the best material for stairs (it's slippery), and can develop mold and mildew problems in very humid areas. Mountaingrass is often referred to as hemp in the rug industry, and is an excellent, attractive and tough material suitable for just about any use or space.

There are many other types of area rugs out there for you to choose from as well such as outdoor vinyl area rugs and shag area rugs, if none of the ones mentioned before sound like what you are looking for. Talking to an interior decorator can also give you more ideas on how to protect your floors and beautify your home. An area rug is a great jumping off point and the wealth of possibilities are virtually endless.
