I think I have an ALL problem...

It all started innocently enough in junior high, when a friend handed me a dubbed copy of The Descendents' seminal album Milo Goes To College. I had never heard anything like it before. Sure, I had heard some of the "popular" punk bands of the day, such as NOFX, Bad Religion, and the like, but none of them could grip me the way that this did.The nerd in me associated with I'm Not a Loser, the loser in the game of love in me associated with Hope (probably the greatest punk rock love song of all time), and the rebellious teenager in my associated with Parents. These guys knew how I felt. They knew what it was like to be me. I quickly aquired the rest of The Descendents' discography, and loved everything I heard. I memorized all the lyrics. I played them incessently. I lived for the Decendents.

My love for the Descendents never waned, but I was started to want something more. The inactivity of the band, made it hard to fulfil those urges. I had known for a while, that Bill, Stephen, and Karl had gone on to form another band called ALL (named after the last Descendents album at that time), after Milo went back to College, but I had always avoided them, because as I said back then "It isn't Milo". I went out on a limb, and ordered a copy of ALL's first album, Allroy sez... I was disappointed. I gave up on ALL and didn't try again.

The next year, The Descendents Reunion album, Everything Sucks, was released. I was in heaven. It was the first new music from the Descendents in 7 years. It was, and still is a great album, and I love it to this day.

I my never-ending quest for new music, I picked up Punk-o-Rama 3 from Epitaph records in 1998. On it was a song by ALL called World's On Heroin. I was dumbstruck. It was good. Really, really good. It would seem, that I wrote off ALL too early. I bought of a copy of Mass Nerder, the album that World's on Heroin, is on, and instantly fell in love. It was everything The Descendents were and more. I broke out my old copy of Allroy Sez..., gave it a few spins, and even came to like it after all these years. They were on their third lead singer, and once I got ahold of all of those albums, I loved all of them, from every lead singer. I now love ALL even more than the Descendents. I know the words to every one of their songs. I listen to them constantly. I live ALL.

The question is, what happened? How could I pass up something so damn good like that? Was I too young to appreciate it? Did I just not give it enough of a chance? I don't know, and probably never will. There is one thing I know for sure though:

I've gotten so incredibly used to being with Andrea every weekend, that it's going to be very very odd not having her here this weekend.
I imagine the weekend will be filled with beer, coffee, and World of Warcraft.

I have to go get fitted for my tux for my brother's wedding on Saturday. We are getting zoot tux's and wearing Dr. Marten wingtips. We're going to look awesome.

This is a great album. Everyone should be required to own a copy. That's the kind of legislation I could really get behind.

I may not have gone where I intended to go, but I think I have ended up where I needed to be.

There's nothing like a DNA quote for a post title. It holds very true to my life right now though. If you told me even six months ago that my life would be looking like it is, I'd tell you you were crazy. Things are better than they've ever been. I'm close to buying a house. I've got the most awesome girlfriend ever. For once, things feel like they're going my way.

Here's to the future, and how awesome it's going to be.


Other current random thoughts:

  1. 1. World of Warcraft is incredibly awesome, and very much like digital crack.
  2. 2. I'm getting a new video card for Christmas from my parents. This one to be exact. I can't wait.
  3. 3. I think I need to buy some more ram for my pc. 512mb just doesn't seem to be cutting it anymore. Decent pc3200 is going pretty cheap these days, thankfully.
  4. 4. Opera 8.5 for Series 60 is great. It just keeps getting better and better.
  5. 5. WOXY is great. The new stereo streams sound amazing.

Andrea and I are going to see The Bellrays Friday night. I'm very much looking forward to it. From what everybody tells me they put on an absolutely fantastic live show. It's at a venue in Pittsburgh that I've never been to before, Club Cafe. I've been told it's a pretty good venue. I guess we'll see Friday.
