The way to progress throughout the diplomatic training is to pass all the requirements. These can lead Third Secretaries to become Second Secretaries. The Second Secretary becomes the First Secretary. After this, the next step on the career ladder is to become a Councilor. He in turns receives promotion to become a Second Class Minister and then an Ambassador, or First Class Minister.
The job of a diplomat involves attending committee meetings, both at home and abroad. The diplomat represents his department and his country and speaks up for what he believes is the right solution. This is an extremely vital role to improve foreign policy and Brazilian culture. The diplomat also is on the look out for information which will help him and his colleagues to improve conditions for people living at home.
The role of an Ambassador can be a very varied one. In his position at the Embassy, he is the one people will turn to if any events arise, which need him. He may be called on to deal with legal matters such as drug trafficking, or human rights issues. He may be asked to help with economic and financial tasks. Or he may be needed to speak about community or climatic affairs.
It is true that the world has become a much smaller place than ever before. Electronic communications help to bring people together now, faster than ever before. And issues which concern the whole planet are dealt with by all Ministries and especially international relations. A diplomat must be prepared. He must have knowledge and use good judgement. He must be prepared to travel to other countries, maybe even to live abroad for extended periods of time.
Diplomats can be from any walk of life. They can have administrative experience, or be accountants, lawyers or doctors. They can come from scientific backgrounds, which would help greatly in dealing with climate change issues or they can come into the training straight from education. As long as they are dedicated and committed to serving their country, then they will do very well.
