Even if you prefer the looks of wooden flooring, flagstones or a similar hard surface to your flooring, you probably have some sort of loose rug or two somewhere savings around. Rugs soften the appearance and feel of hard surfaces and tend to be comfortable for activities that take place on to the floor, such as exercise or tinkering with children. But the time will come when loose rugs will need to be cleaned.
That you can do a reasonable job with cleaning a loose rug which has a vacuum cleaner. This will have to have some co-ordinations, as a very strong vacuum cleaner will move the rug around and even latch onto the main rug and start lifting it up. You must put the vacuum cleaner on one half of the rug while vacuuming the other half, then swap across. To clean an inferior rug or any rug that has a thicker pile and doesn't get wash with just vacuuming, roll the rug up and get outside. Find a good open space, and required rug a hard shake. This requires a fair number of physical strength. Shaking will dislodge larger items of debris and dust, but dust and hair will probably still be trapped inside pile. Small rugs can be shaken for longer, and this may well get them properly clean.
The next step in cleaning large loose rugs can be an old-fashioned one: beating. Hang the rug on the washing line and start hitting it. If you can aquire hold of an old-fashioned rugs beater, this is preferred. Unfortunately for the rest of us, these are harder in the future by - this writer has not seen one in a retro shop or a second-hand dealer's store. A tennis racquet works pretty much, or even a really stout stick. Beat your carpet on both aspects, working systematically over it. Very filthy rugs will have to be cleaned with soap and water. Smaller ones may be washed in a machine if they're in good enough condition (frayed area rugs will disintegrate).
