To learn how to sing and at the same time play the guitar will takes a lot of practice. Because you are working with one sung word for each note played on the guitar, you are in effect dealing with the same song played at different rhythms.
With these combination it really takes some practice to master it and you will also have to tackle certain issues. Below are some of the common problems faced by musicians:
* Singing on pitch * Matching a particular song syllable to a particular guitar note * Maintaining a strumming pattern while singing * Maintaining coordination * Maintaining timing for the duration of the song * Keeping song rhythms in sync
Don't be discourage since thousands of people have mastered singing and playing guitar at the same time though it may seem like an impossible task to handle the two different task mention above. Here are some guidelines to help simplify the process:
Start Simple
Start simple and don't try to do too much at once like some people do. It's a common mistake. Complicated songs that are either difficult to play on the guitar or difficult to sing or both are the the songs they people pick. The result is that one or the other suffers. Often the song is sung well, but the strumming pattern becomes repetitive with little or no variation.
Starting it simple means pick a simple song both in playing for the guitar and for singing. You will have a much better chance of mastering playing and singing together if you choose a song within your voice range.
To make it more simple, you can learn to play the guitar by just humming the song first, so the lyrics and other things wont distract you. You should not even have to think about the hand movements when playing guitar chords once you've become really familiar with it. That will free your brain to concentrate on singing the words. It will come naturally.
Timing is one of the most difficult problems people have in singing with a guitar. The guitar notes will get ahead of the song if the words are not sung at the right time. Like playing the chords in certain words of the song. In other words, there are certain musical notes and certain words or syllables that need to occur during the performance.
Like what was said before, keep it simple. Before singing and moving on the second verse, make sure you knocked out the first verse and able to sing it accurately. You should be able to master the first verse fairly quickly if you have chosen a simple song in the beginning.
One more tip to make a simple selection is to chose a song where the song rhythm and the guitar rhythm are almost identical. That way, you don't have to worry about your guitar hand and your singing getting out of sync.
Use Your Imagination
Imagining pitch, as a beginning singer, that should be one of the most important skills you will learn. In producing the right tone, envision your body in alignment. You'll need to use this same imaginative strategy when learning how to sing and play the guitar.
For example, you can play the song in your head while also imaging yourself playing the guitar. You can actually 'see' the fingers creating the chords if you know the song well. Some people actually start with a recording of the song before even trying to play and sing it.
If you start with a recording, practice singing with actual music. That will develop your sense of timing so you can blend the rhythm of the singing to the rhythm of the guitar playing.
There is really no set rule for learning how to sing and play guitar. If there was, it would just be: "Practice, practice, and practice!"
