...it's the roll that counts!

I had been thinking about various ways of GMing (Game Mastering) and how one can integrate characters and players into a game. Personally, I prefer RPGs that focus on the roleplay aspect and the story rather than the die rolls and mechanics battles, much of which is OOC (out of character). This has led to a few discussions with my brother as well. He mentioned people talking on RPGnet about which system to use to introduce a young player to RPGs. I started playing RPGs in grade seven with a simple, custom-made system based off the old NES Final Fantasy game. We did little in the way of character development or focus on the intrigue and settings or even interaction with the NPCs initially. Most of it was the battles and the rolls and just simply kicking ass. We had a puzzle with one die because the numbers 4-6 NEVER came up on a roll until we figured out it only had 1-3 printed on it (two 1s, etc).
