Depending on who you speak to you will hear different answers for who they feel is the greatest band of all time. Many give this honor to the Beatles, where other believe that the honor goes to The Rolling Stones. Although there are some that will argue for Pink Floyd, Led zeppelin or The Who, most of the people tend to be split between the Beatles and The Rolling Stones.
It is like a great debate when you get into a room with Beatles and Stones fans. Who is the greatest band of all time? For me it is the Beatles. Although the Rolling Stones are an influential and popular band, whose music I do enjoy, The popularity, influence and originality of the Beatles can never be topped.
For argument sake, let's just agree that The Stones is the second best rock band of all time. For arguments sake at least, we will say that. Regardless of where they are on your personal list, virtually everybody can agree that the band has a ton of great songs in their catalog. Admittedly, most of their greatest music was written before'70, but they strung out a few gems through the seventies and eighties and even into the nineties.
At the time of their prime they commanded attention when they performed. They had a wonderful British rock sound mixed with gritty jazz and American southern rock. They infused all kinds of music sounds and were a force to be reckoned with. In the seventies they even stayed true to the times and incorporated some disco, which was all the craze, while still keeping their rock edge.
The Beatles broke up in the early'70s, just before the release of Abbey Road. The Rolling Stones are still together today, creating albums and touring world wide. An argument could be made that The Beatles made the right choice to get out while they were on top. An argument could also be made that since the Rolling Stones have remained together for so long that they are the better band. So which side of the debate do you fall on? As for me, I believe "you can't always get what you want, but if you try sometimes you just might find, you get what you need".
