Generating Ideas For Things To Test
No matter what type of testing you're doing - A/B or multivariate - you need to come up with ideas for things to test. This isn't usually too difficult at first, but once you've done a few tests it can get more and more difficult to find new ideas. Let's discuss a few ways to generate these ideas.
Your competition can be one of your best sources of ideas. For example, if you're selling a dog training product, you could check out other dog training products to see what they're doing on their pages.
You can test all kinds of things:
- Layout
- Colors
- Headline styles
- Calls-to-action
- Order buttons
You obviously don't want to copy them verbatim, but you can use their page as inspiration for ideas of your own.
It's also sometimes helpful to look at sites in other markets, not just your own. Even if the topic is totally unrelated, you can often find ideas that will apply on your own site.
You can also get some good ideas from other media like TV and print. A lot of techniques used in these other medium can be reworked for the web.

Take a screenshot of them or capture them with a tool like Evernote so you can go back and review them when you're looking for new test ideas.
