Multivariate testing - also known as MVT - is a process that lets you test multiple variables all at the same time to find the combination that is most likely to provide the best results. MVT is more complicated to set up than a simple A/B split test but it can provide results much quicker. In this article we're going to look at how it works and how you can implement it yourself.
Many people refer to multivariate testing as "Taguchi" testing but the fact is that is only one of several designs that you can use for these tests. There are a number of software tools that will manage these tests for you, and the specific design varies from one to another.
There are technical differences between these different methods but we're not going to get into the math behind them here.
Google Website Optimizer is one of the more popular tools for running multivariate tests, partly because of the cost - free. Another good application is Split Test Accelerator, which is not free but is quite powerful.
In either case, you simply set up a number of different options that you want to test:
- Headlines
- Subheadlines
- Calls to action
- Order buttons
- Color scheme

You can choose any options you want on your sales page and create several versions of each. Whenever someone lands on the page on your site, they will see a particular combination of all those variables.
