Multivariate testing - also known as MVT - is a process that lets you test multiple variables all at the same time to find the combination that is most likely to provide the best results. While MVT is more complicated to manage than split testing, you can get results from it a lot quicker. In this article, we're going to look at how it works and how you can use it on your websites.
Many people refer to MVT as "Taguchi" testing, but the fact is that is only one of several methodologies. You can get various software tools for running these tests, and each uses particular methodologies.
There are mathematical differences between each of the methods but we're not going to get into detail in this article.
One of the most popular MVT tools is Google Website Optimizer, partly because it costs nothing. Another good application is Split Test Accelerator, which is not free but is quite powerful.
With either tool you set up a number of options that you want to test:
- Headlines
- Subheadlines
- Calls to action
- Order buttons
- Color scheme

You can choose any options you want on your sales page and create several versions of each. Whenever a visitor comes to the page, they'll see some combination of all those factors.
