The Best Present You Could Give

Usually at the end of a school year, students are filled happiness, sadness, feelings of anxiety and doubt, but usually the dominant feeling is excitement. Whether one is transitioning from middle school to high school, or from completing their undergraduate studies to beginning their doctoral degree, the same excitement usually fills the air. This type of excitement only comes few times in life, and if one buys a yearbook, one can access this moment of happiness for the rest of their lives.
Yearbooks (also known as annuals mor record books) highlight and commemorate what had occurred over the past year in high school, middle school, or whatever establishment you are a part of that of that is giving out yearbooks. Yearbooks are full of many different sections that all commemorate and remind the public of the great, or not so great, events that happened throughout the year.
Yearbooks are most known for the pictures that are taken and chosen to be part of the annuals. If one takes a class picture, they are usually guaranteed to be part of the yearbook photo spread. It’s the class pictures that most people first dive into when they first get their yearbook, or when they take a look back at the yearbook fifteen years down the road of life. These class photos document what one looked like at that specific year in their life.
The second most popular section of the yearbook usually is the club activities and sports team sections. In these sections, full team and club rosters are pictured and listed, letting everyone know what activities or sports you played in high school, college, or what business or organization you represented. This section is popular because it allows one to reminisce when one opens the yearbook the moment they get it, and “x” amount of years later. One can relive the moment their high school football team won the homecoming game with a last second field goal, or when their volunteer club built a ramp for a person in a wheelchair. Without a yearbook, moments like the ones just mentioned are hard to relive and will often fade away with time.
Now in days, yearbooks are adding a “current events” section to the book, so that readers can remember the major headlines that occurred throughout that specific year. Examples of such current events would be that the U.S. elected the first African American President, or students in Chile protested in the streets because education wasn’t affordable anymore, or even the Olympic Games results. Adding this section not only makes the reader experience feelings of nostalgia, but it further reminds them of their past.
An unfortunate part of life is losing people that we love tremendously. Most yearbook staffsremember this fact and in response add a memorial section to annual. This section is for anyone who passed away during the year but deserves recognition. This can be staff member, students, pertinent members of the community, or anyone else who the yearbook staff feels lead to include. Although this section will inevitably bring sadness, it’s important to remember those who have left a great legacy behind.
Annuals are a great and often expected luxury to have in schools, but they don’t come cheap. The cost of putting all the pictures together, editing, all the writing and making the book itself can be unexpectedly high. One way to cut down this cost is to simply offer local business advertisement space in the book. This way, the yearbook can be affordable for all students.
I would encourage any reader to buy their yearbook if you can afford it. Simply put, it is a gift that will keep on giving forever.
