Laws of supermarkets are not our laws

, , ,

Very often customers in supermarkets lose fights for their rights. The main problem is that most of the buyers just do not know their rights. Let’s have a look at the most widespread supermarket conflicts:
Law of supermarket #1: Leave your stuff in a locker. Many supermarkets have lockers for storing stuff. Usually, there is a person near the lockers who asks customers to leave their bags. At the same time there is always a note hanging on the lockers with something like “The administration of the supermarket is not responsible for the stuff left in the lockers” written on it.
Real law: Customers are made to make a public agreement of gratuitous storage of stuff. But according to the law customers have a choice whether they want to make such an agreement or not. If a customer wants to make an agreement, keeper must provide full safety of the property. If your property was lost or damaged, supermarket has to refund its cost.
Law of supermarket #2: If you break, you pay. You take a bottle of wine from the shelf and accidentally break the one that stands near. There and then you see a supermarket representative who demands paying for the broken bottle.
Real law: It you take the needed item and turn over another, this is fault of the supermarket. Even if you break something, no one can file a claim to you. And if a fallen item could be dangerous for you, this can even become a ground for a lawsuit. Buyer has a right not to pay on a locus delicti. Find witnesses and call police.
Law of supermarket #3: Hunger territory. Sometimes it happens that you come to a supermarket and feel like eating something, but at first you need to make some purchases. We would take something to satisfy hunger, but everywhere eye catches signs saying that “Eating not paid products is forbidden”.
Real law: In reality, unpaid product is a property of a supermarket, that’s why it can’t be opened. To tell the truth, you can ignore this rule. Just do not forget to pay for the product.
Law of supermarket #4: We are not responsible for you. You are walking in a supermarket, and suddenly fall down. It appears that the floor has been recently cleaned and there is still a pool of water left. This pool was the reason of your epic fall. Your screams attract security officer, but everything he says is: “You should have been more careful”.
Real law: supermarket is a building for which its owner is responsible. If there was not warning on the floor, you have all right to sue.
Law of supermarket #5: Be ready for the inspection. You are leaving a supermarket, and here appears a security officer who asks you to open your bag or show the pockets. He thought you were hiding a stolen product.
Real law: If security officers ask you to open your bag, do not worry. The thing is that you can easily refuse doing what he asks. According to law, security doesn’t have any right to inspect your staff (only policemen can do that). If security suspects you in a theft, they can call police. The most of what security can do is to follow you and watch where you are going.
